Loren was born to Leland and Linnea Rankin in their home in Burlington Washington. The little family moved to Bellingham when Loren was one. As a youth Loren had a paper route in Bellingham, developing his life long strong work ethic. Loren's father was re - activated into the Navy when World War 11 broke out. During this time the family moved where ever his father was transferred. As a result Loren attended five high schools, graduating from Oakland Technical HS in California.

Loren signed up to be a U.S. Navy Sailor at age 17. He always said he was in the 'rear with the gear.' He was in Memphis, Tennessee preparing to be an aerial gunner. When the war ended the Rankin family then moved back to Bellingham where Loren enrolled in Western Washington College of Education, now Western Washington University and earned a B.A. and M.A. in Education. It was on the campus of WWC where he and his wife of 64 years , Ruth Soderstrom of Camano Island, met and were married on August 19, 1950.

Mr. Rankin began his career in the Seattle Public Schools in 1950. He was a Junior High teacher and soon became a demonstration teacher, vice principal and principal.

Loren Rankin loved life and life loved him right back. His quick wit and humor will be fondly remembered. Loren, beloved husband, father and grandfather died peacefully surrounded by his adoring family. He is survived by his loving wife, Ruth, sister Sara, children Nancy Morris (David), David, Douglas, and 'Papa" to granddaughter Nicole Lundin, niece and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Calvin Presbyterian Church, Friday, May 22nd, at 11:00am.
