Lorraine Atwood Obituary

Lorraine Slingsby Atwood

1918 - 2016

Lorraine Atwood passed away Sunday, September 4th, at the age of 98. She was a thoughtful person with a good sense of humor. Her passions were gardening, boating, skiing and college football. Lorraine had UW Husky football tickets for 70 years and attended countless games at the stadium in Montlake.

Lorraine was born in 1918, in Addy, Washington, to Vern and Blanche Slingsby. She came to Seattle as a teenager to live with her uncle and graduated from Lincoln High School. She met Stanley Atwood (1916-1991) while skiing, and married him in the Boston Navy Yard in 1944.

Throughout her life she was very involved with the democratic party 46th district attending many local and national events including the 1972 Democratic National Convention. Lorraine became active with the Pacific Northwest Ski Association (PNSA) as both an employee and a volunteer, working many ski races in the Northwest. She organized ski trips through PNSA and skied many of Europe's famous ski areas. She was a member of the Ancient Skiers Club and a member of the Sahalie Ski Club for 59 years.

Lorraine is survived by her daughter Susan and son-in-law John, son Tom and daughter-in-law Meredith, daughter-in-law Cheryl, grandchildren Ashley & her husband Tom, Troy, Rachel, Todd, Erik, Jacob, Isaac, and Xavier, and great grandson Finn. Her son, Stan Jr., died in 2000.

There will be a gathering to celebrate Lorraine's life at the Shoreline Elks Club, Friday, September 16th, from 3-7 pm located at 14625 15th Ave. NE, Seattle, WA.

We grew up next the Atwood's (1965-1987). Our backyards shared a gate and we spent plenty of time running back and forth. Lorraine was always active with a beautiful garden. I was amazed to learn from Tom that she was still in the same house and gratified to learn that she lived so well for so long. Quite a lady that Lorraine. I smile to think of her.

Lorraine, aka Mrs. Apple, the matriarch of the Stan Atwood family, is already missed. She always had an educated opinion, and was willing to engage in a conversation on nearly any subject. I'll miss the drives to & from the ski club with her in the back seat reminiscing about the good old days. And I'll miss her acting like a mother hen for all of the young "folks" at the ski club, which pretty much included everyone! And the family gatherings will never be the same again. I'm proud to have enjoyed her friendship for the past 15 years. God bless her soul.
