Maurice (Maury) S. Green

Maurice (Maury) S. Green was born March 5, 1914, to Martha Stephen and Clarence Edward Green in Douglas, Washington. He died August 4, 2012, at Bethany at Pacific, Everett, WA. He is survived by his wife, Beulah, his daughter Janet Rinehart, son Roderick Green, step-daughter Nancy Noe, step-son John F Biehl, and several grandkids and great-grandkids.

He served in the Army during the mid-late 1930s, stationed in Hawaii at Fort Shafter. He was a member of his Army boxing and swimming teams, excelling in the backstroke.

Maury worked for Heisers Incorporated in Tukwila, WA, in the late 1930s, which was acquired by Pacific Car and Foundry and re-tooled to build war equipment for the Lend-Lease Program with Great Britain.

In 1946 he moved to Meadow Creek Lodge on Lake Chelan, and in 1950 he and his wife, Martha, purchased Moore Inn Resort, also on Lake Chelan, where they moved with their three children. His role as host and proprietor suited him well, and he honed his magician skills by performing for guests. In the off-season he partnered with Chelan Pine Industries to make pine cone Christmas wreaths for sale through outlets in several large cities. A fire destroyed Moore Inn in the late 50s and Maury and Martha divorced and he moved to Seattle

At Boeing he worked in sheet metal fabrication and pattern-making. At a training class in 1960, Maury noticed a class of cerebral palsy students temporarily sharing the Holgate training facility. He put on a magic show for these students, and, after having a very good experience, tried to organize a troupe of Boeing performers to give gratis shows to hospitals, etc. He would continue his interest in volunteer work throughout his life.

During the 1970s he and second wife, Beulah, co-owned and operated the Hi-Sign Co. located at 7511 Aurora Ave N.

Many people will remember Maury for his magic shows. He was a member of The Society of American Magicians, Inc, and the Pacific Coast Association of Magicians, Inc. Maury enjoyed performing at Moore Inn Resort, and as a "semi-professional" on the night club circuit, and at fairs, variety shows, etc. After retiring he offered his talents to the King County RSVP, where he performed in vaudeville shows and in dinner theatre productions of "The Drunkard" in 1983 and 1985, and in "Arsenic and Old Lace" in 1987. He also donated his magic skills to the Washington Games for Physically Disabled Citizens, Seattle Parks and Recreation Senior Variety Show and the Specialized Programs for Handicapped Youth Summer Camp, The Masons Ladies' Night, the Lowell School, and WA State Chef's Association Senior Appreciation program, Shoreline Adult Day Health Program, the Wallingford Community Senior Center, and many other groups.

Maury was an avid golfer. He and his wife, Beulah, took up Lawn Bowling in the 1980s. He served as President of the Queen City (Woodland Park) Lawn Bowls Club from 1983-1985, and again in 1995. After the clubhouse was destroyed by arson, Maury was active in fundraising and the rebuilding of the facility, earning formal Appreciation from the club members in 1997.

Maury took up drums in his 80s and kept the beat going for groups such as the Sentimentalists, Jolly Jivers, Silver Tones, and the Bandaids, who performed at senior facilities and clubs in the greater Seattle area.

He spent the last few months at Comfort Care, a beautiful home on 48th Drive in Snohomish. The family wishes to thank the many people who provided assistance and friendship to Maury in various hospitals, rehab and assisted living facilities over the past year.
