Nancy Macdonald Obituary

Nancy Adelaide Macdonald

Nancy Adelaide (Maclaren) Macdonald, of Shoreline, WA, passed away on May 18, 2017, at age 92. Nancy was born in rural Canada on March 20, 1925, the daughter of Hugh Alexander Maclaren and Clara Audrey Fennell. Nancy's younger brother, Angus Manning Maclaren, preceded her in death (1931-2013). She grew up climbing trees and picking fruit on the family orchard in Vernon, British Columbia.

Nancy married Robert Macdonald (1927-2016) in 1950. They divorced in 1974, but remained dear friends for the rest of their lives. Nancy earned her Bachelor of Social Work at the University of British Columbia and immigrated to the U.S. in 1956. She received her Master in Social Work from the University of Washington in 1968 and went on to work for Group Health Hospital. Later, she saw clients in private practice and taught at Antioch University. Nancy held leadership positions in many social work organizations, including the Satir Global Network. She led workshops well into her eighties. She was also a founding member of the Shoreline U.U. Church.

Nancy is survived by her three children, Linda Berthelson, Cathie Hamilton, and Ian Macdonald. She leaves behind six grandchildren and seven great granddaughters. The twinkle in her eyes remained bright throughout most of her 92 years, especially when her great-grandchildren came to visit.

She had a zest for world travel, networking, and new experiences. Maybe a bit outspoken for some-yet for others she helped them find their voice. Nancy grew up during the great depression. She was thankful when she had what she needed and was committed to helping others whenever she had more. Nancy was a proud mom, grandma, and great-grandma. Her adventurous spirit and passion for helping others will live on through those she leaves behind.

I knew you since 1973. You reparented me & led me gently over time to realize my own potential. You loved both of us until I could love myself. Thank you!
I was saddened to find out on my computer in 2019 that you had passed away in 2017. I lost track of you after you left Golden Leaf. I miss you Nancy and will always remember you. Farewell my friend.
