Phyllis James Obituary
1943 ~ 2014
Phyllis James, a beloved teacher, mother, wife, neighbor, and friend died on Saturday, January 11, 2014 after a long struggle with ovarian cancer.
Phyllis graduated from Cherry Hill High School in New Jersey as valedictorian in 1962 and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics, Magna Cum Laude, from Muhlenberg College in 1966. She also studied at McGill University and Widener College in the '60s and '70s. In 1986 she received a Master's Degree in Computer Science from the University of Washington.
She had a long and varied teaching career at the University of Wisconsin, Widener College, Delaware County Community College and many other institutions before she and her family moved to Shoreline, Washington in 1986. She was hired as a professor in computer science at Shoreline Community College in 1989, and retired from full-time work there in 2009. A faculty excellence award for teaching was given to her by the college foundation in 2000.
Phyllis was loved and respected by her colleagues, friends, neighbors, and family. She was a humble, gracious, kind person who was a role-model to many.
She is survived by her aunt Mary Cluelow, sister and brother, Patricia Manley and John Breitling Sr., daughter Tamara Becker, son Christian Becker, and husband John James. She will be missed by the many people who knew her during her life-time.
A Memorial Service will be held at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Seattle, 4805 NE 45th St, Saturday, February 1 at 2:00 p.m. Memorial gifts can be donated in Phyllis's honor to the American Cancer Society or Planned Parenthood.
