Richard Strand Obituary

Richard Allen Strand

"Dick" passed away

September 23, 2017

Dick was born November 3, 1927 to Herman and Elsa who came to the US from Sweden in the early 1920's along with Dick's beloved brother Roland, fondly known as "Rol". He grew up in North Seattle and graduated from Seattle University. After a brief time in the Army he found his true love, Irene O'Neil and they married in 1948. Dick worked many jobs during their young married years while Irene was busy raising the 5 children.

In 1962 he established his own business, Shoreline Plumbing & Heating where he and Irene worked side by side for 20 years. He retired in 1982 and for the next 40 years he was involved in the investment and development of real estate, again with Irene was by his side. In the 65 years of their marriage they were rarely separated. He loved to work, set an incredible example to all, and at 89 years old went to the office 5 plus days a week. He taught his children how to work hard for what they wanted, and was so proud of what they had accomplished.

Dick loved his handball group, golfing with friends, skiing, boating, watching sports and vacation time with the family. His favorite place was the cabin he built on Camano Island. He loved sharing his time there with family and friends.

Dick is survived by his children Kristine (Michael) Villiott, Richard (Cynthia) Strand, Kimberly (Rob) Entrop, Michael (Kim) Strand and Patrick (Janice) Strand. His grandchildren Matthew (Christina) Villiott, Mark (Jane) Villiott, Kyle (Marni) Entrop, Kelly (Colin) Edmonds, Todd Entrop, Sophia (Brandon) Olson, Bree Beireis, Shelly (Dave) Baisch, Ryan (Rachel) Strand, Davis Strand, Julia Strand.

His great grandchildren Zoe and Claire Villiott, Lilli and Amelia Villiott, Cayden and Charlee Edmonds, Asa and Sloane Entrop, Bennett and Wyatt Olson.

When Dick and I were at Roosevelt High, I was a lonely, out-of-state transfer and we became friends, skiing together as he noted in my Roosevelt Annual, and tooling around in our Fords, his a '36 Convert and mine a '32 coupe. What I remember is the way he reached out to me to ask if I would take care of his Ford while he was in the hospital having his appendix removed. That was an act of trust that has stayed with me my whole life. We only saw each other once in our later lives at the stop sign at the intersection of Drexel and Mercer where we stopped alongside each other in our much later cars and exchanged a few words and drove on. Dick and I were the same age and I don't attend memorials because that would break the spell of recalling two 17 year olds and our Fords. An act of kindness lasts a lifetime.
