Richard Boggio Obituary
Richard "Dick" Boggio, 81, passed away at Home Place Special Care Center in Burlington, WA on Friday, March 7, 2014. He was born to Richard and Retha (Metcalf) Boggio on December 23, 1932 in Red Lodge, Montana, the first of six children and grew up on his family's ranch near Red Lodge. Dick graduated from Carbon County High School in Red Lodge in 1950 and continued his education at Montana State College to become a high school music and math teacher. He married Elva Johnston in 1953 and they raised four children. In 1961 the family moved to Pullman, WA for a year while Dick completed a Masters Degree in education counseling. They moved to Snohomish County in 1962 where he was a counselor at Edmonds and Meadowdale High Schools, and then at Shoreline Community College for the last twenty years of his career, retiring in 1987. Dick always had a boat and enjoyed fishing with family and friends, was an avid sports fan, and loved to tell jokes and stories. Preceded him in death were his parents and sisters, Karen Hotchkiss and Kaye Lyytinen. Surviving Dick are his daughter, Theresa (John) Slater; sons Steve (Debra) Boggio, John (Diane) Boggio, Anton (Cindi) Boggio, and their mother, Elva Johnston; brothers David (Marlene) Boggio, Dan (Charlene) Boggio, and sister Kristin (Scott) Marshall; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Also surviving him is his wife of 30 years Grace Boggio of Anacortes, WA. A memorial service will be held at Anacortes Lutheran church, 2100 "O" Ave. on Saturday. March 22nd at 11a.m.

Mr. Boggio was my advisor at Shoreline CC in the mid 70s. He was very instrumental in smoothing the transfer to WWU where I earned my BS degree in 1976. We became instant friends, since I was raised in Eastern Montana and we had some common acquaintances despite our age difference. I then later met Gene Boggio, his nephew who was just like Dick. Both proved you can be friends and professionals and still do a great job. I think our Montana connection gave us a ‘one up' on everyone else. May Mr. Boggio forever rest in peace. God continue to bless the Boggio family. Very sorry I am unable to attend the memorial today.

It was a honor to work with Dick at Shoreline for those 20 years. Dick was always so kind and caring about the students. He was a real great person and his passing is a loss. We are remembering his family in our prayers.

Mr. Boggio was my counselor the second year Meadowdale High School was open. One day, I was quite surprised to get a note to see him in his office. He wanted to know if I was OK. I wasn't, but I couldn't talk to anyone about what was happening at home. I simply said, "I just want to be in college." I could tell he didn't want to push, but he wanted me to know he was there if I ever needed someone to talk to. I was helping with a project in his office when the 1965 6.7 earthquake hit, and he was calm as a cucumber, making sure we were all OK. I will always remember him as a very warm and understanding person, with a lot of humor. My sincere condolences to his family.
