Richard Leidholm Obituary

Richard W. Leidholm

Dick Leidholm, beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend, led a full and adventure-filled life until Thursday, July 19, 2012. He passed away at his home in Shoreline and will be missed by all. Dick was born November 26, 1944 to Wilmer and Olga Leidholm. His childhood was spent exploring West Seattle with all of his buddies. His fondest memories were of the days with his Whidbey Island family crabbing and clamming.

After graduating from West Seattle High School, he attended WSU. He then returned to Seattle, married Karen Gustafson and soon after became a dad to Kim and Craig. The young family filled their lives with camping and hunting, boating and skiing.

Dick worked for his dad at West Seattle Furnace, eventually taking over the business. He became a fixture in the West Seattle business community.

Dick met and married Cathy Funk in 1995, beginning a new chapter in his life. They created their dream home together on Samish Island, spending every weekend working on "The Barn" for over 18 years. Dick retired there full time, reveling in the beauty of what he had created. His dream was fulfilled.

Dick is survived by his wife, Cathy, his children, Kim and Craig, daughter- in-law, Christie, grandsons, Christian and Matthew, extended loving family and a lifetime full of friends.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to Providence Hospice of Seattle or the charity of your choice.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, August 2nd at 11 a.m. at St. Luke Church, 322 N. 175th St., Shoreline, WA 98133.

We have a next door property to Dick & Cathy on Samish Island. Dick was a great guy and always wonderful & easy to work with and a pleasure each time our paths crossed. I was really struck by the news of Dick's passing. My heart goes out to his family & friends.

My condolences go out to Cathy, Kim, Craig and families. Even though I knew his parents (my aunt and uncle) in the early 90s when Tracy and I lived in Seattle, I didn't get a chance to know Dick very well. That opportunity came later through Kim and some ancestry work that I started. It was great that I got to know him better, and sad that as cousins, we could have enjoyed the outdoors more had I known him when we lived in the Puget Sound area. What a great guy! Just calm, cool, and collected. Funny. He had a fascinating history and every conversation was so interesting. God obviously needed Dick for bigger and better things.

Many excellent memories of Dick from shared experiences in Troop 277 (!?!?!) and First Lutheran youth activities. A truly honest, genuine guy who I probably didn't see after the 10th or 20th high school reunion but whose death touches me. Oh, and he always looked great (I say enviously) in his West Seattle Indians football uniform and action pose which for some reason is an indelible memory too. Thanks, Dick.

My memories of Dick span more than 50 years -- and all of those years bring back memories of fun and joyful times spent with him at his home in West Seattle and on the Sammish Island property. I was blessed to be part of his extended family on the "Gill" side. His smile, warmth, and gentle energy will be greatly missed.
