Theodora Sherman Obituary

Theodora Ann Sherman

Theodora Ann Sherman passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 2, 2018. Born in Beloit, Kansas on May 1, 1926, Teddy-as friends and loving family called her-was a wonderful storyteller. She kept listeners rapt with her tales of growing up in Kansas, the daughter of the sheriff during prohibition and surviving the Dust Bowl. (She and the other schoolchildren were sent home early when dust storms blocked out the sun at noon.) With her gorgeous auburn hair, quick wit and charming no-nonsense demeanor she captured the heart of naval fighter pilot, Gordon Keith Sherman (GK). They married after WWII and began their life as a Navy family, shepherding their five children to residential postings on air bases across the U.S. They eventually settled in Shoreline where Teddy turned their home into a hub of activity for all the neighborhood children. Teddy and GK shared a great love and devotion for one another and their kids, who they took on many great adventures including annual ski trips to Oregon and Idaho.

Eventually, with her children grown, educated, and sent off into the world, Teddy herself went back to school at the University of Washington for a degree in Accounting, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. She successfully built an accounting firm consisting of female colleagues and had the privilege of serving as president of the American Society of Woman Accountants. Teddy was a life-long tennis player, skier, and tournament bridge player traveling to events near and far with her beloved sister-in-law, Nancy. She was radiant, funny and a positive and loving force to be reckoned with. Her friends and family will always remember her for her youthful vigor.

Teddy was preceded in death by her beloved husband of sixty years, GK, her son, Stephen, her only daughter, Anne, and her grandson, Taylor. She is survived by sons Lawrence Sherman (Gail), Mark Sherman (Leigh), Christopher Sherman (Tonya), daughter-in-law Johanna Sherman-LaRussa (Mike), brother-in-law William T. Sherman (Evelyn), sisters-in-law Mary Louise Stroud (Ned) and Nancy Lee Grant, and cherished grandchildren Sarah, Lauren, Brianna, Spencer, Corinna, Alan, Jaesha, and two great grandchildren, Sam and Theodore Hague and many beloved nieces and nephews.

I am sad to share that just yesterday Laurene McCall, Teddy's sister, also passed away. Karen and Scott are planning a memorial at St. Anne's in Wichita at the end of February.

Aunt Teddy will be truly missed. She lived with such flair. She taught me to use the best material I could afford for my projects if I was going to put in the effort to make something. I'm so glad we were able to see her last spring.
