Virginia Neumaier Obituary

Virginia Neumaier

Virginia Neumaier was born in Minneapolis, MN May 15, 1921. She passed from this world in Shoreline, WA on November 7, 2015.

"Genius Ginny", as her friends called her, wanted to study Architecture at the University of Minnesota. But the college dean explained that math skills required for architecture were too complex for a young woman to grasp. She graduated in another field, - one that the men of the time considered appropriate for a woman. But she always loved architecture and design.

Virginia was a craftswoman. She designed and built things out of wood: first pushcarts in the 1920s, then furniture and home modifications throughout her life. In 1953, she designed and with her husband built a cabin near Hibbing, MN. She was Bob Dylan's Sunday school teacher, a lifelong Democrat, friend to both Hubert Humphrey and Walter Mondale and a past-president of Minnesota's League of Women Voters.

Ginny encouraged her three children to have integrity and follow their hearts. John became a physician-scientist, Diane an artist and Rutgers professor, and Roger a financial manager. She is survived by her daughter, two sons, daughters-in-law Deborah and Marsha, six grandchildren and sister Joyce Hartman of St. Louis Park, MN.
