Warren Elmer Obituary

Warren D. Elmer

May 7, 1924 ~ September 21, 2016

Warren passed away September 21, 2016 from injuries suffered in a fall. His beloved wife of 68 years Jane predeceased him in March 2016.

Warren was born May 7, 1924 to Henry and Hedwig (Haddie) Elmer in Hebron, North Dakota. He was the eldest of three sons. During the Depression the family moved to Wenatchee, Washington where he graduated from high school. He joined the Army in 1943 and was selected to be a part of the 10th Mountain Division ski troops. This specialized unit was trained in mountain warfare and sent to Italy to fight in World War II.

When the war ended, he married the love of his life Jane. He attended the University of Washington on the GI bill and graduated with a bachelor's degree in economics. Warren and Jane traveled to South America and spent a year in Lima, Peru which they enjoyed immensely. Upon their return to the states, Warren worked for Texaco as a dealer representative. Later he became an agent for Farmers Insurance and reluctantly retired at age 84. Warren was honest, kind, compassionate and a life long liberal. His daughters remember spending many of their younger year's doorbelling for local Democratic candidates.

His loves were friends, backpacking, reading, bicycling, walking and Morris Minors (especially the 1967 truck he had restored). His greatest love was his family. Warren was a member of Toastmasters for 60 plus years, an active member of the 10th Mountain Rainier chapter and enjoyed his Makers Mark to the end.

Warren leaves behind two daughters. Ann (Paul) and Mary (Chuck) who miss their parents every day.

A celebration of life for Warren and Jane will be held Sunday, July 16 from 12:00-4:00 at the family home (15557 Interlake Ave. N. Shoreline, Washington).

One of the best stories he ever told was the time he and his wife went to Lester Washington. At the time you could only get there by train. They missed the last passenger train. So the only way to get to Seattle was hopping on a freight train and that is what they did!

Warren and his wife Jane were two of the nicest people you could ever meet. They were a friend to all.

I met Warren several years at the Lake City Toastmasters club. We became friends and continued to have breakfast together on Thursday mornings after the Toastmaster club discontinued. He was bright, friendly, and had clear political opinions which contributed to great conversations with our mutual friends. I miss him and am glad to have known him.

I met Warren when shortly arriving to Seattle after joining his Toastmasters club. We shortly formed a friendship sharing public speaking and our mutual love of Progressive politics.

In the 80'sWarren and I biked up Whidbey Island to the San Juan's ferry. The next day I was wasted while he was in fine fiddly - he was twenty plus years older . . . .

Warren was a man of his word, a caring sincere person. The world would be a much better place if more people were like Warren!

How sad it is to lose two such wonderful people. We of the 10th Mountain division thank Warren so much for his attention to our chapter and his many devoted years to us.

Our prayers are for the family that they both were so proud of and wish for them long and happy years ahead.

I knew Warren and Jane through the Mt Rainier Chapter of the 10th Mountain Division Association. My father, Dan Phillips was in the 10th and my husband and I kept going to meetings after he died because it was such a great group of guys and their families. We really enjoyed getting to know Warren and Jane. They were both lovely, delightful people and they will both be missed.

Our condolences to the children and family,

Lynn Phillips and Warren Bakken

I met Warren in the early ninety's as a colleague in the insurance business. My first impression of him remains with me to this day. He was as affable and friendly a person as I have ever met and I have fond memories of our time together on so many different occasions.

Warren and Jane were special people and they will be fondly remembered by all who knew them.

I met Warren and Jane in the early eighties since their Farmers Insurance office was next door to our print shop. After the shop was sold, I worked for them for several years and they were the best bosses ever! A very special couple and they will be missed.
