Wesley Orrestad Obituary

Wesley "Ole" Orrestad

Wesley "Ole" Orrestad passed away on December 12, 2012 in Port Orchard, WA. Ole, as he was known to all, was born in Mydland, Norway on Feb 8, 1918 and immigrated to Butte, MT with his mother, Ingeborg and 6 siblings in 1930 joining their father, Pedar who had preceded them to America to work and support his family during difficult economic times in Europe. The family arrived in New York harbor on the ship 'Stavangerfjord' as did so many from Norway during those years.

In 1937, Pedar was tragically killed in an oil refinery accident in Butte and Ole and most of his siblings moved to Fergus Falls, MN where he graduated from Hillcrest Academy. It was there that he met the former Violet Hendricks of Superior, WI who became his wife of 56 years. Ole volunteered for the US Army in 1941 and while in boot camp, married Violet just before being shipped overseas to the Pacific theater. Ole was part of a special intelligence unit, the 37th Signal Center Team composed of native Norwegian speakers whose mission was to support the allies in their efforts to free occupied Norway. He eventually served with this special unit in the Philippines and New Guinea along with General Douglas MacArthur.

After Violet's death in 1997, Ole married the former Ruth (Post) Sand of Spokane, WA in 1999, a family friend from their teen years in Butte who had also lost her spouse and the two of them enjoyed many happy years together.

Ole enjoyed a long and successful career in commercial construction, having worked for H. Halvorson, Inc. of Spokane, WA, Lovering Construction of St. Paul, MN, PC & D Construction of Seattle, WA, SDL Construction of Bellevue, WA and Crown Builders of Scottsdale, AZ. He rose to the position of Vice President and Chief Engineer and oversaw the construction of scores of buildings in the Western US including Shoreline High School, Albertsons Food Centers and hospitals, banks, government buildings and healthcare facilities, most notably the Letterman General Army Hospital in San Francisco.

To all who knew him, Ole knew how to work hard, and play hard. He loved leading teams of people to complete large projects with challenging deadlines as well as working on his own projects at home and as a volunteer for his church. He especially loved water skiing and snow skiing with his family and teaching both high school and adult Sunday school in his church. Ole's deep faith and his sense of hard work, integrity and generosity influenced many and made him a valued mentor and role model for his family and for the many who knew and worked with him over the years.

Ole is survived by his wife, Ruth (Sand) Orrestad, his daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Dave Oxendahl of Worden, MT, his son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Colleen Orrestad of Clyde Hill, WA. He is also survived by 3 sisters, Berit Olafson (Joseph) of Louisville, KY, Thelma Hollenbeck, of San Jose, CA, Anne Campbell (John) of Gildford, MT, 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Ole will be deeply missed and warmly remembered as a devoted follower of Christ, a gifted builder, a principled and admired leader of people and a loving husband, father and grandfather whose generosity knew no bounds when it came to giving his life in service to others.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, January 12th at 2:00 PM at Maple Park Church, 17620 60th Ave W, Lynnwood, WA 98037 (425.743.2288)

Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be sent to the Wesley Orrestad Endowment, Lutheran Brethren Seminary, PO Box 655, Fergus Falls, MN 56538.

Jan and Chuck,
I am sorry to hear of your dad's passing. He and your mom were such wonderful people and surely did enjoy knowing them. Dad and Mom had the utmost respect for your parents and Dad surely did enjoy working with your dad through the years. The Halvorsen family was a joy to work for. One of Dad's favorite stories about Ole was when they went fishing and Ole got so excited when he caught a fish that he threw pole and all in the bay. My thoughts and prayers are with your families.

Gordon and I want you to know that we and Ole's mutual friends and acquaintances in the construction business remember him often - and always with much affection. He never walked anywhere! Ole was always running a million miles an hour and his energy level was a certain indication of his passion for life and love of people. We're so forunate to have known Ole - we only wish we'd had the opportunity to see more of him in recent years. God Speed, Ole! You're one of the very best Vikings ever!

To Jan and Chuck and your families: This is from Karen Ornee (Keevy). Since I have moved back to Spokane, I saw the notice in the Spokane paper. My thoughts are with you at this difficult time. I have such fond memories of our friendship and all the wonderful times your Mom and Dad were so generous and welcoming. So many times we were able to go water skiing on beautiful summer days at Long Lake. Our parents became good friends and Mom especially loved going out to lunch with Vi. My friendship with you Jan was so special to me - - remember lunch at the Crescent, planning for weddings, and going places in your convertible. I remember your Dad always smiling, lots of energy and making time for us. It was evident that he was a man who loved God and lived with integrity. I wish I could attend the memorial to celebrate his life but will be with you in my thoughts and prayers. His was a long life well lived with a lasting impact on those who knew him. It's been a long time since we have been in touch but I think of you often. My address is 4112 E. Center Rd, Mead, WA 99021. Would love to reconnect with you. May God comfort and bless you.

Ole was a valued individual to the Halvorson Family. Not only professionally, but personally. He was always happy, lots of fun, full of energy, and you knew he really cared about you. Our Grandpa Halvorson was the one who brought Ole into our lives - first in a personal and then in a company way. We all knew and loved Ole.

Judy and I send our love and prayers to the family, knowing Ole "lived big" and left a big hole in your lives. As his nephew, I remember him most for his generosity, faith and great sense of humor. We all saw Ole through different lenses at different times of our lives and want to remember Ole at his best, full of health and humor and faith...an example of a good and godly man to follow. May God's grace and peace comfort all who loved him and together celebrate with Ole as his faith becomes sight in the presence of God.

What a privilege to share in the life of Uncle Ole. Good memories of laughter, adventure, and above all his generosity. Silver dollars in his pocket when he would come to visit, stories at the dining room table long after dessert, and another cup of coffee helped the stories to linger. One particular memory is of a trip "out West" in which against the advice of Aunt Vi, no reservations were made in advance - rather just drive and see where it would take us. As a result, we had one night of sleeping in sleeping bags in the desert with the strong smell of sagebrush in the night air. To this day, when I smell sagebrush, I think of Uncle Ole. In later years he reminded me that he did make ONE reservation for the motel in Santa Barbara that had a swimming pool ... which was truly a luxury for that day. He will be remembered by this niece of his for his generosity and his strong faith. The world was a better place for his living.

To Jan & Chuck and families ... you are in our thoughts and prayers during this time. God's peace ... Susan Brue

Kay and I send our love, thoughts and prayers. I have fond memories of the Orrestad family ever since I spent a night with them in Salt lake City in 1961 when the Hillcrest Academy Choir, of which I was a member visited salt Lake. Also I used to hear stories about my father, James Moline, and Ole when they roomed together at Hillcrest I believe in the 19,30's. We mourn the passing of these great men of God and will keep you in our prayers.
