From Jeannie Howard Snider (Mary Ellen Harris's daughter):
Uncle Herb was my favorite Uncle & I adored him. He had a great sense
of humor & was a caring, fun loving person. He'd rather laugh than eat.
During a visit back in the 90's he asked me to drive him down Old Pelzer
Rd in Piedmont, S.C. across from the Estes Plant. I did & during the
ride he spoke of his female high school bus driver (I can't remember her
name but he did) & how he made an uncomplimentary statement about her
being overweight & may cause the bridge to collapse as they were about
to go over it. Everyone on the bus had a big laugh at her expense. He
carried the inconsiderate remark over the years, never forgetting &
always felt guilty for hurting her. He still felt bad because he had
never apologized. We went past her Mother's house & he said "Jiminy
Crickets", she's outside doing yard work; pull in! He couldn't get out
of the car quick enough; she recognized him, they talked about old
times, he introduced me, then he very sincerely apologized with tears in
his eyes, about how remorseful he was & asked her to forgive him for the
rude comment he'd made years ago (he was about 13 at the time.) They
hugged & naturally she told him she forgave him years ago. I realized
that day that he had exceptional character, was honorable,
compassionate, had a strong conscience (a God given gift), & proved that
it's never too late to attempt to right a wrong.
Anyone that knew him (myself included) is a better person having known
him.
I love you Uncle Herb! I'll see you there.
