Kathryn Benshoof Obituary

Kathryn BENSHOOF Kathryn Charlotte Benshoof passed away January 22, 2011 at the age of 91. She was born December 18, 1919 in Jamestown, North Dakota, the daughter of Carl and Charlotte Odney. Active in Girl Scouting, she earned the Golden Eaglet award. After graduating from Jamestown High School, she attended Jamestown College before transferring to North Dakota State College at Fargo, North Dakota where she graduated in June 1941 with a BS degree from the School of Pharmacy. As a Registered Pharmacist, Kathryn worked in North Dakota and taught Pharmaceutical Chemistry at North Dakota State. On May 15, 1945, she married Lynden Benshoof in the Navy Chapel in Bremerton. Upon completion of Lynden's active duty with the Navy, they lived in Renton and moved to Bellevue in 1957 where they raised their children. Kathryn worked for several drug stores in the Seattle area as a pharmacist and was an inspiring Girl Scout leader who loved the outdoors where she skied, camped, backpacked and cruised in their 19 foot boat throughout the Northwest and British Columbia. She belonged to the Bellevue First Presbyterian Church. Kathryn is survived by her husband, Lynden, her daughter and son-in-law Lynda Kay and Jim Frantz , her son and daughter-in-law William and Linda Benshoof, grandchildren Chester Frantz, Tracy Frantz Reinhart, Chris Benshoof and Brian Benshoof, and great-grandchildren Katelyn and Max Reinhart and Miles Frantz with more to come. Memorial Service will be held at Sunset Hills Funeral Home January 28 at 1:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Totem Girl Scout Council in Kathryn's name. A remarkable woman! Growing up next door to the Benshoof clan - Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Mrs. Odney, Tag-a-long...wonderful memories! I was not personally part of the infamous Girl Scout Troop, but enviously watched from the sidelines as they enjoyed their camping/backpacking trips! Mrs. B lived by example, honoring her parents and Mother Earth herself. She certainly left her mark on our world and it is a better place for her contributions.

Mr B, Lynda Kay and Billy :-) know that these are memories that many of us will cherish and were integral in building our characters - thank you for sharing this woman with us!

I didn't know Kathryn personally, but on behalf of everyone here at Girl Scouts of Western Washington (formerly Totem Council), I wanted to thank Kathryn for her contributions and her spirit. She was a remarkable woman and we were lucky to have her support our organization in helping to carry out the mission of empowering girls.

Thank you again.

I remember Mrs. Benshoof as a neighbor, a best friend's mom, and my Girl Scout leader for many years. I have fond memories of camping trips and backpacking trips so many years ago. We hold you all in our hearts and prayers.
