Patricia Goldberg Obituary

Patricia "Diddy" GOLDBERG Diddy Goldberg, age 87, passed away peacefully at home on April 9th, 2011, in Bellevue, Washington. She was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma on March 7th, 1924. Her loving parents were Harry N. Pollock and Helen (Ginsburg) Pollack of Talihina, Oklahoma. Diddy attended Stephen's College followed by the University of Texas, where she met her husband Jay Goldberg at a USO dance that was attended by young women from the AEPhi Sorority. Jay and Diddy were married in 1943. After Jay returned from the European front of World War II, the married couple returned to Jay's former home, Aberdeen, Washington. Everyone in the harbor remembers with fondness the Goldberg Furniture Store, which serviced the community from 1926 to 2001. Her beloved Jay passed away in 1997. Diddy loved to entertain with Jay at their home in Aberdeen. She was an excellent cook and a consummate shopper, especially of home décor and fashion - she loved to dress well. Diddy and Jay travelled extensively throughout the world, with her favorite destination being the Orient. Diddy also loved engaging in conversation, equipped with a keen dry wit and unwavering sense of social justice. A person of strong convictions, she knew how to convey them clearly. Diddy will be remembered for her love of community and tenacious spirit. Her humor, caring heart and infectious smile will be truly missed. Diddy is survived by her brother, Newton Pollock; son, Larry Goldberg; daughter, Diane Cohen; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Special thanks to all her loving friends, Dr. Rice and her staff, all the employees at Pacific Regent, all the Careforce staff and Diddy's personal caregivers. A grave side service will be held at the Beth Hatfilo Cemetery, Masonic Memorial Park at 455 North Street, Tumwater Washington 98501 at 11:00AM on Wednesday, April 13, 2011.

Today I learned that Diddy passed away. I want to express my sympathy to her family and friends. I will miss Diddy certainly, but she always will remain in many of my great memories of growing up in Aberdeen. Diddy, Jay, and my parents (Harold and Ann) were friends and our families interacted a lot. Diddy was the first person to serve me "kosher" razor clams and I have loved razor clams, "kosher" or otherwise, ever since.
When I was very young, I would visit the Goldberg's Hood Canal summer home. Diddy and Jay let Larry and me run an 18-foot boat with a three HP motor. We wore big orange preservers and were allowed to travel beween three houses to the left and three houses to the right. Larry and I would do this for hours on end. I was excited about this adventure.
I remember arguing with my Mother about why couldn't I take ham sandwiches to Sunday School? I loved ham sandwiches and Diddy let Larry take them. I lost the argument and envied Larry for having Diddy as a Mom.
As a child growing up, I always thought Diddy was great and open to "fun". When I became an adult, I also realized how intelligent she was and I enjoyed our conversations.
I will miss her.

Diddy was one of the "Grande Dames" of Aberdeen along with Ruth Wolff and my Mother, Goody. An end of an era....

Diddy was like a second Mom to me and I think of her often and am sorry that her life took the turns that it did in later years. She taught me how to entertain and cook and she gave me recipes that I use today. I consider Larry and Diane as part of my family and I hope this will bring you peace. Mary Dobrovich Selfridge

Deepest condolences to family and friends. Diddy gave us so much joy over the years especially when she would join us for special holiday events. She knew how to light up a room. We will miss her.
