Carl Lovsted Obituary

Carl M. Lovsted

April 4, 1930 ~ November 8, 2013

Carl M. Lovsted, son of Carl & Catherine Lovsted passed away peacefully on November 8, 2013 at Overlake Hospital.

Carl felt blessed to be in a position to help others and always wanted to give something back to the community. It brought him joy to improve the quality of someone's day. Carl will be remembered for his warm smile, big heart, integrity, and strong work ethic. He brought forth a positive attitude and encouraged others. He felt blessed to have fulfilling life experiences and strong friendships.

Carl valued his connections with the University of Washington Crew program, Greenlake Crew, Overlake Hospital, Childhaven, Young Life, Union Gospel Mission and Vine Maple Place among others. He loved spending time in his garden nurturing flowers to provide colorful flower bouquets. He enjoyed time with his family, his grandchildren and friends. His family has been enriched by his relationships, including business clients, athletes from the University of WA, and the staff at Overlake Hospital, numerous coaches and family friends. Dad always felt that our lives have been blessed by these relationships and we are lucky. He was right.

We want to thank all close family friends for their support, the Barrow Family, Dr. J. Walter Smith and his outstanding team at Overlake Hospital, Al Rossi, Bill Boone, Jen Cohen, Michael Callahan and the entire UW Team. The list goes on and on. Our family is grateful for all your support.

Carl was a member of the Rowing Stewards at the University of Washington and a strong supporter of the Green Lake Crew as he was a participant in both programs.

Carl attended Franklin High School, then the University of Washington from 1948-1952, graduating with a degree in business. He was a member of the University of WA rowing program and earned a bronze medal in the Helsinki Olympics with Al Ulbrickson Jr., Dick Wahlstrom, Fil Leanderson and Al Rossi in 1952.

Carl worked in the Insurance industry for over 40 years, establishing Lovsted Insurance, now Lovsted/Worthington Insurance which is owned by his son Carl III. Dad has been proud of his son's efforts in taking over the business he started.

Carl is survived by his sister Liz Van Pelt, and his children Karen Williams and her husband Brad, Carl III and his wife Carrie, Jim and his wife Lisa his grandchildren Julie, Kimmy, Laura, Christie, Carl IV (CJ), Lindsey, Kate and Matthew.

A celebration of life will be held at the University of Washington Shell House, on Saturday December 14, from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Carl & Louise Lovsted endowment at Childhaven, 316 Broadway, Seattle, WA 98122, or the Carl & Louise Lovsted endowed crew scholarship at the University of WA, Box 352800, Seattle, WA 98195 or the charity of your choice.

It is this time of year that reminds me most of Carl and his sweet and loyal nature. Cutest man ever! He used to get so excited for Opening Day and even when he was ill he insisted on bringing us lovely flowers from his garden to use at the Windermere tent. Super special human being. We will miss him this year and are sorry for your loss. I have proposed that perhaps your family row through the Cut before the races begin in memory of Carl. Let me know.

Carl frequented the Meridith Mathews YMCA where I was lucky to sweat next to him for many an elliptical hour. He brightened the whole place with his bouquets and gentle kindness. I talked to him over years as he grieved and went on from Lou's death. Plants from her garden now emerge in mine. What a wonderful role model for how to grace the world. I wish I had seen his garden, but I am grateful for our conversations and hope to use my retirement as he did his. I learned of his passing only yesterday, from Michael Callahan at the Connibear Shell House as I looked for Lou's boat and thought about Carl. My thoughts are with you all

Carl had a tremendously generous heart. It was difficult to stop by to say 'hello' without leaving with an armful of flowers or a plant from his garden.

Love and condolences to the Lovsted Family. Both Carl and Lou were exemplary people.

With deepest sympathy to the Lovsted and VanPelt families. Carl's father and my grandfather, Alfred N. Lovsted, were brothers. My mother shared many stories of visiting with the Lovsted family in Mt. Baker.
