Dear Derek,

I was in the store the other day when you told me the news of your dear son's passing. I noticed that you seemed a little different. I am so glad you honored me by sharing such a deeply personal, and tragic event in your life. I have been thinking about you and your family, and surrounding you with beautiful thoughts.

I lost my husband at a young age, after a 4 year illness with an extremely rare bone cancer.

At times I wished he had died suddenly, so he wouldn't have had to go through such a prolonged illness, with such terrible physical and emotional pain.

The bad news is, you will always feel an emptiness. The good news is, you will get better.

Sharing your grief is one of the healthiest things you can do. You find out how many people care about you and Carter, and it gets you focusing outward, and helps you grieve.

Carter's beautiful photo and obituary are heartbreaking. Your son had the most beautiful smile. My sister-in-law cried when I told her about it.

I hope you find comfort in reading all the wonderful tributes in your guestbook. I am thinking of Carter.

Sincerely,
Sheila Gavin

Derek and family,
Although I didn't know Carter, I can tell that he was loved very much. I have 2 teenage boys, one of them just a few months older than Carter, and I can't even begin to imagine the pain and not sure if I can even find the right words. All I can say right now is that I pray for you guys each night. He will be watching over you.

I cannot and do not want to imagine your pain right now. As the mother of two little ones I only ask that the Good Lord watches over you and reminds you evey day that he loves Carter and loves you and that Carter wants for nothing now. He is with God bless his soul.

My most heartfelt condolences to Carter's family and friends. I never knew your boy, but I can feel the joy he brought to your lives and the emptiness that his passing has left. You are all in my heart and in my prayers.

I am so sorry for your loss. I looked forward to serving him every day for breakfast and lunch at Evergreen Kitchen. I got to know his favorites, (peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, CHIPS, and courious george snacks). I miss seeing him everyday singing and dancing around. David and I were amazed that one Friday he ran up to me, with a big smile and said 'Morning Ammy,(Tammy). My heart goes out to you and your family. He was an awesome boy!
