Arthur Lane Obituary

Arthur T. Lane

Born August 24, 1930 at Providence Hospital. He grew up on Capitol Hill, attended St. Joseph's grade school, Seattle Prep, Seattle University and then UW Law School, where he was a member of law review. After college and before law school Art served two years as a U.S. Marine officer in the Western Pacific.

Art worked 30 years for the City of Seattle Law Department as director of the Utilities Division, representing the city's utilities and City Light, including matters involving the Northwest Electric System. In 1978 he received the Outstanding Public Employee award from the Municipal League of Seattle and King County.

Upon retirement, he did consulting work for Seattle City Light on other regional power issues and then participated with other city retirees in lawsuits requiring the city to use utility funds only for utility purposes rather than general municipal purposes.

Art was married to Eleanor (Brown) Lane in April 1958 and was blessed with five children: Stephen Lane, Nancy (Hood), Annette, Maureen (Mastrobattista) and Mary Anne (Strow). They were longtime Queen Anne Hill residents, before moving to Magnolia in 1985, and enjoyed memorable camping trips to the national parks throughout the Western U.S. They were also blessed with ten grandchildren, Arthur, Edward and Thomas Lane, Aimee, Gordon and Erin Hood, Jenny and Ellie Mastrobattista and Abby and John Strow. Art's brother is Fr. Thomas V. Lane who resides in Yakima, and his parents were Timothy and Helen Lane, both of whom emigrated from Ireland.

Art was a member of the Knights of Columbus and worked at the Magnolia Community Blood Drive at Our Lady of Fatima for many years. He was a founding member of the Highland Poetry Society, as well as a board member-and for one year president-of the Seattle Metropolitan Credit Union.

Art was known for his bread-baking and his great pancakes. He loved books, history and poetry. He was loved and admired by all who knew him and will be greatly missed.

Arthur was a class act. We never heard him utter a discouraging word. He was intelligent, kind, and always optimistic even facing terrible odds he kept up a good attitude. His kindness toward my sister shall live on in our hearts. He served as a role model for us on what it was to be a good person who cared about others. We feel blessed to have known him.

We will always remember him as a gentleman who loved his dear wife and family and was a great friend to many in his community.

Rest in peace Arthur we will miss your presence in our daily lives.
