J. Phillips Obituary

J. Joe "Red" Phillips

J. Joe "Red" Phillips of Shoreline passed away June 5, 2013. Born February 22, 1936 in McLoud, OK to Audrey and LaVoy Phillips who then moved to Yakima in 1942. Joe began delivering the Seattle Times when he was 11 years old in Yakima, then continued as a color photoengraver in 1962 for the Times in Seattle until retiring in 1997.

Joe was skilled at succeeding at any task he tried: carpentry, home remodeling, car mechanics, fishing and fly tying, camping, jewelry crafting, hiking, photography, furniture making and repair, gardening, reading, wine tasting and volunteering. He served on the Richmond Beach Library Board, the city of Shoreline Library Board, the Richmond Beach Community Association Board, Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 851, took kids on fifty mile hikes through and across the Olympic Mountains, received several awards for community service, volunteered as a facilitator in the Talk Time program for those wanting experience speaking English and regarded each new day as a gift.

Joe is survived by his wife Evelyn (Eve) of 55 years, sons Jimmie Joe Jr. and Ronald K. Phillips and daughter Janice Phillips Coles, a brother Bill Phillips and their respective families.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that friends of Joe honor him with used book donation or thoughtful contribution to the Richmond Beach Library. An open house/gathering will be held at the library to remember Joe on Saturday, June 29, 2013 between 10:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at 2402 NW 195th Place in Shoreline.
