M. Cannon Obituary

LTC Ret. M. Clinton Cannon, PhD

Clint Cannon was born June 5,1926 and passed away April 7, 2013. He grew up in Wauwatosa, WI, enlisted in the Army during World War II and proudly served for 32 years. Tours of duty in Germany, Korea, France and Vietnam took him all over the world. His last overseas assignment was to Taiwan. Clint graduated from the Univ of Illinois, later earned two Master's degrees and his PhD.

After his military career, Clint taught at several universities retiring in 1989 from the Univ of Puget Sound. His vast knowledge and love of history lead him to become a reenactor at Fort Nisqually Living History Museum where he was Chief Factor John Work for many years. Clint loved trains, big and small, riding AMTRAK frequently and being an active member of PSMRE who built and run the WA State History Museum layout. Clint served on the boards of Tacoma Opera, Tacoma Philharmonic and Associated Ministries. A faithful Christian, Clint was active in the national and local United Church of Christ.

He is survived by his loving wife, Ruth, and sons Jim (Bob Haig) and David, daughter, Cathie (Sharon Monaghan), granddaughter, Mackenzie Cannon, and stepchildren SaraLee Broback (Steve) and Brad Smith (Renee). He was predeceased in 1981 by Louise Hodam Cannon, the mother of his children. Clint made many friends, loved his family deeply, read extensively, traveled with an open mind, and will be missed always.

A celebration of Clint's life will be held Saturday, April 20th at 1:00 p.m. at United Church in the University Place. Donations in his memory may be made to Associated Ministries or a charity of your choice.

We knew Clint through the Republican Club and I always enjoyed chatting with him. He and his wife also hosted a home tour for our University Place Historic Society. He will be greatly missed!

When you joined our preservation group several years ago I knew that we had obtained a quality member. Each time you came by the exhibit you only had encouraging things to say and it was always such a pleasure to see and talk to you. The last time you visited you presented us with the three 8"x10" old photos from the Tacoma area for our exhibit. They have been displayed ever since. We missed you this year and hoped all was well with you Clint, and now we know. What a void in our roster, but what a gain in Heaven. Rest in peace good friend. On behalf of the Northwest Public Transportaion Historical Group I want to send to the family our sincere sympathy and condolances. We all have you in our thoughts and prayers.
Sincerely, Al Ramey, President
