Albert Y Ouchi

Albert Y Ouchi, 90, died May 2 in Portland, OR. Born in Seattle, his mother died in 1926 so the Mimbu family helped raise him and his sister, Margaret. He graduated from Franklin HS and attended the University of Washington. Al volunteered for the 442nd Army Reg'l Combat Team (552nd Field Artillery, Purple Heart). He married Yoshie Terayama from Bainbridge Island in 1946 and graduated from Whitman College in 1949.

The Portland (Oregon) School District recruited Al from Whitman. He taught at Franklin and Grant High Schools, did graduate work at Reed College and developed programs and materials to teach economic concepts to young students. In 1967 Al took a job with Interior Dept in Washington, D.C developing education programs for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Later, he worked in the Bureau of Land Management's EEO division overseeing policies across numerous agencies.

After retiring back in Portland, he and Yo golfed, fished, traveled. Yo died in 2007. Al continued to cheer on the Mariners, Seahawks and Freddie Couples. Al was very proud of his service in the 442nd, of his many years in education and of his family.

Survivors include daughter, Carol Brunner (Charles), Vancouver, WA; son, James Ouchi (Barbara Faust), Bend, OR. Two grandchildren, Michio Brunner (Emily) and Miyoko Brunner and a great grandson (Leander Ouchi Brunner) live in NYC.
