Alice Carle Obituary

Alice Carter CARLE Alice May Carter Carle died in the early morning hours of April 20th, 2011, in Seattle, Washington. She began life in Curlew, Wash ington on May 9th, 1915, the daughter of Ira Carter and Edna Graham Carter. Her father man aged the Curlew Creamery, and her mother was a homemaker and had been the town postmis tress and bookkeeper for Curlew's big general store. The family later moved to Chewelah, Washington, and eventually to Spokane where she graduated from North Central High School and Kinmin Business School. After working and saving for sev eral years, Alice enrolled in Washington State College to study English. While a student there, she met Birdsall Carle, who was a student of veterinary medicine. After their marriage, the couple moved to Berkeley, California where Alice completed her B.A. degree at the University of California at Berkeley, and her husband graduated from Stan ford University Medical School. The couple had three daughters: Molly, Kathleen, and Deborah. The family was living in Bethes da, Maryland when the marriage ended, and Alice moved with their daughters back to Spokane, and then to Seattle two years lat er. Alice worked for a number of years for the Dean of the Univer sity of Washington Medical School, and also completed the university classes required to obtain a teaching certificate. She focused on elementary school teaching, and spent much of her career at Kimball Elementary School on Seattle's Beacon Hill. In 1963 Alice took a leave of absence from teaching, sold her big house on Capitol Hill, and fulfilling a life-long dream, embarked with her three daugh ters, then ages 20, 17, and 12, on a one year trip to Europe, where they traveled extensively and lived in Neuchatel, Switzerland, studying French. Returning to Seattle, she resumed her teach ing career. Her keen interest in travel and foreign languages led her to take a sabbatical in 1970 to Mexico, where she studied Spanish in Mexico City, San Miguel de Allende, and Cuernavaca. After her retirement, Alice continued to travel, to Mexico many times, also to New Zealand, Costa Rica, Afghanistan, Iran, El Salvador, Wales, and toured the United States by bus. She was a life-long Democrat and an active member of Plymouth Congregational Church and the Mountaineers. She moved to Horizon House in 1994, where she lived until her death, enjoying many friendships among the residents and staff. Alice was preceded in death by her brother, William Carter, her sisters, Margaret McEachern and Marian Cagle, and a grand son, Sean Schow. She is survived by her daughters Molly Green, Kathleen Chamberlin, and Deborah Carle, granddaughter Shannon Schow Carpinelli, grandsons Morgan and Duncan Goulding, great-granddaughters Gabriella and Daniella Carpinelli, and great-grandsons Marcel and Jonah Goulding. A celebration of Alice's life will be held at Horizon House, 900 Univer sity, on what was to have been her 96th birthday, Monday, May 9th, at 1:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, a dona tion in Alice's name to Plymouth Housing Group is suggested.
