Anthony Hovey Obituary

Anthony Freeman Hovey

Born August 25, 1926. Tony, a graduate of Yale University, moved to Seattle from New York in the late 1950s. Following his experience in the insurance industry, Tony struck out on his own providing consulting services to health care and pension plans.

His outside interests included hiking and mountain climbing in the Cascade Mountains and Columbia Gorge. He made generous donations to the preservation of outdoor spaces throughout the Northwest.

After a brief illness, Tony passed peacefully January 20, 2014. Per Tony's wishes there will be no funeral or memorial service.

I did not know Tony, but I have one story to share. On a climbing trip with two friends (all of us from Michigan) to the Cascades in 1974, we happened to meet Tony and his son, Matt, at Steamboat Prow on Mt. Rainier. Tony was planning to climb Mt Rainier with Matt the following day, as were my two friends and I. We were the only parties climbing that route on Mt. Rainier then, and in fact the only ones on that side of the mountain, as far as we could tell. While we didn't climb with Tony and Matt, we stayed in touch from time to time during the climb. We all successfully reached the summit and returned to camp. We were impressed with Matt's determination and Tony's commitment to his son. Tony also helped us plan future climbs. My deepest condolences to Tony's family and friends.

I had the pleasure of knowing Mr. Hovey through his support of KCTS Channel 9. He was a sponsor of PBS Newshour. I arranged for Jim Lehrer to send him a letter in response to his concersn about the Newshour. Mr. Hovey was deeply touched by this. He will be missed by his friends at Channel 9.

Was so sorry to hear of Tony's death on Jan. 20th. I first met Tony in the late 80's when I owned a slide production company in Seattle. He gave me a number of challenging photo and video projects that really put my skills to the test – but I learned a great deal because of them. As time went by, he invited me to go with him on a couple of his hiking trips. I enjoyed them in part because we hiked to some great photo locations. You could really see how much Tony enjoyed hiking in the outdoors.

More recently, after I had left my business, Tony and I kept in touch and I even worked on a few projects for him over the years. I admired the hard work and dedication he showed toward his clients and his insurance and retirement planning insights were always very helpful to me.

Attached is a photo I took of Tony when were hiking in Zion National Park in Utah. I often think about that trip, and how enjoyable it was to be there. I am fortunate to have known Tony. My deepest condolences to his family.
