Barbara Lynne (Ballard) Carl

1938 - 2018 Obituary Condolences
Barbara Lynne (Ballard) Carl Obituary
Barbara Lynne (Ballard) Carl

Barbara passed away unexpectedly in Sequim, Washington on August 26, 2018 at the age of 79.

Barbara was born in 1938 in Seattle, Washington to Lorna Carmichael and Dr. Lucius A. Ballard. She attended Ballard High School, graduating in 1956, and the University of Washington, graduating in 1959 as a registered nurse. She worked as a surgical nurse for over 30 years in private practice and in the operating rooms of Ballard, Swedish, Providence, Virginia Mason and Children's Hospitals. She started her own business as a surgical assistant and traveled around the United States as an invited speaker at professional conferences. She also volunteered her time and experience to travel to Guatemala and Palau to assist with surgeries.

Barbara married Robert (Bob) Bennett Carl in 1959. They were married 57 years until Bob's death in 2017. She is survived by her son Scott Carl (Terri Orthel) of Las Vegas, Nevada, daughter Terri Strandberg (Dave Huson) of Bothell, and two grandchildren Thorin and Linnea Strandberg.

Barb loved to sew and cook. She used these skills to help her church community, contributing many hours preparing items to donate for church functions and fund raisers. But first and foremost Barbara was a caregiver and nurse. She found great purpose in helping others, cooking for friends who were ill or injured, running errands and transporting friends to church, appointments or social functions, and participating in support groups for those who were grieving or caring for loved ones with chronic illness.

Barb and Bob spent many hours traveling around the western states and hiking the trails of the Olympic Peninsula where she photographed every wildflower and chipmunk along the way. She cherished the memories of her treasured mountains, rivers and beaches and the friends that shared those adventures.

Barbara also loved animals, her two beloved cats and her two giant "grand-dogs". Her friends were regularly regaled with stories and pictures.

A memorial service will be held on October 20, 2018, at 1:00pm, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 525 N. 5th Ave., Sequim, WA. A reception will follow in the parish hall.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Peninsula Friends of Animals, P.O. Box 404, Sequim, WA 98382, or to the , 710 2nd Ave., Suite 900, Seattle, WA 98104.
