Carl Arthur Bowman Obituary
Carl Arthur Bowman

Carl Arthur Bowman, 89, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2013. Art was born on December 1, 1923 in Seattle and attended Lincoln High School. Upon the death of his father in 1942 and with his older brother already in the Army, Art left the UW at age 19 to take over the family dry cleaning business in Ballard to support his mother and sister. He remained with that business, Sparkle Cleaners, for 41 years.

Art led a rich service-oriented life centered on his family, church and community. Art was proud of his Swedish heritage. He served on the Ballard Hospital Board and as area chairman of School Bond and Levy campaigns. He had leadership roles in Boy Scouts, PTA and Elks Club. Dear to his heart was the 35 years he was a member of Ballard Rotary. He loved being involved in the Rotary Youth Foreign Exchange Program; students from several countries found a home with the Bowman's.

He endowed his children with a love of the outdoors, music, respect for others, and the joys of a full family life. Art's life passion and joy was to lead sing-alongs and to sing for all of us; in church, at both daughters' weddings, at a Mariners game in the Kingdome, and in Swedish at friend's funerals. Christmas was his favorite time of year, as it pulled every important element of his life together. On vacations it was his voice at the campfire that drew campers for sing-alongs, creating memories that last until this day. An avid fisherman, Art loved being out on the water with family and friends catching fish.

He will be missed by Jean, his wife of 62 years, sons Donald (Eileen) and David (Lisa), daughters Kathy (Clif) and Janice, grandchildren, Danielle, Nicole, Elliott, C.K., Callie, Kate, Joe, Marielle and Erika and great grandson Will. Please join us in a celebration of Art's life on October 11th at University Presbyterian Church, 4540 15th Ave NE at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Rotary Foundation, 14280 Collections Center Drive, Chicago, IL 60693 or online at Rotary.org.
