Carl Washington Obituary

A celebration of the life Carl Talmadge "Duke" Washington will be held at the Central Senior Center in Seattle (500 30th Ave. South) on Saturday, June 3, at 2:00 p.m. Mr. Washington, a long-time Seattle public high school teacher and a pioneer in the integration of college football in the 1950s, passed away February 15, 2017 due to complications from pneumonia. He was 84.
Donations to honor Mr. Washington's life and legacy may be made to either the Cougar Athletic Scholarship Fund at Washington State University (Bohler Complex 120, Pullman, WA 99164-1602; cougarsareyouin.com) or the Northwest African American Museum (2300 South Massachusetts St., Seattle, WA 98144; www.naamnw.org/donate-now/).

Such a loss losing "Duke" Washington. He was a very close friend and companion to my brother Norman P. Riise who passed away about 5 years ago. I continued a friendship staying in touch with him through the phone. All of our lives were richer and better because of the close relationship we had for many decades. Duke, I remember the long and lively conversation you and my dad would have through my childhood. I remember my dad telling me that there is nothing more precious that a good friend, and that a person could count themselves very lucky to have one good friend, and I knew that by that, he meant you for him, in his life. As a child, I looked up to you and my dad, knowing you two were true intellects and that your conversations, although my child self could not understand them, were important, inspiring, and full of deep thoughtfulness. I liked to imagine the two of you in college, and the light that must have been around you, as two minds met, two friends bonded, a friendship that truely lasted a lifetime. Later, as a teenager, you gave me my very first own record for a birthday present, and I listened to it over and over, wearing out the vinyl. You used to come to our house sometimes for birthdays and holidays, and would bring a richness to our conversations, elevating us and the party. I remember your yellow jaguar, and your thick corduroy clothing, always so tasteful. You were someone to aspire to in so many ways. We loved you. I am sorry for the loss of you, and sorry that my dad has lost his best friend.

Duke was our neighbor in Madrona for 30+ years. We admired his love of knowledge and constant search for truth. He had a fine mind and enjoyed exploring a wide range of topics. We shared his love of art and literature and his interest in politics. Duke was fiercely independent and lived his life with dignity. He always dressed with style even when he was out raking leaves!
