Charles (Chuck) Gates|
Charles (Chuck) Gates passed away in Sun City West, AZ on June 9, 2014. from cancer of the brain. Chuck was born in Everett, WA on March 6, 1939 to Merrill and Rose (Smith) Gates. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Merrilyn Herzan.
Chuck is survived by his wife Marlene Gates of Sun City West, AZ; his sons Keith(Isabel) Gates, Tony Gates and Matt Gates; his grandchildren Nick Gates, Katie Gates, James Gates, Jessica Gates, Matthew Gates and Nicole Gates. He is also survived by his brother Frank (Peggi) Gates and his twin sister Char (Bud)Leland, and their children. People would ask Chuck if he and his twin sister were identical and he would reply, "why yes, but she doesn't have a beard!"
Chuck graduated from O'DEA H.S in Seattle in 1957. He went to work at Tweedy and Popp Ace Hardware established in 1920 and became the third owner in 1970. He could greet his customers by name, always had a joke or a story and could provide whatever the customer needed no matter how obscure. He retired and sold the store in 1998.
Chuck loved to bowl, golf, cook, play cards, dance and travel. He was a member of Inglewood Golf Club in Kenmore for 30 years. From 1995 until 2010 he arranged group golf trips to St. George, UT to raise money for EVANS Scholarship Fund.
Chuck and his wife had been spending their winters in Sun City West, AZ since 2002 and in 2010 decided to make it their permanent home.
Chuck's family will observe a private remembrance in Seattle. Remembrances may be made in his name to BANNER SUN HEALTH RESEARCH INSTITUTE of Sun City, AZ for the research and eventual cure of neurological diseases.
