Christy Cufley Obituary

Christy Gerhart Cufley

April 13, 1953 ~ November 11, 2016

Christy arrived at life's final mystery on Friday, November 11, 2016 after 23 months of treatment for her metastatic breast cancer. A true Aries, she managed her disease with determination, reflection, and a sense of humor. Christy was first and foremost a feminist and champion for women's rights, graduating from Willamette Law School in 1978 and maintaining vocal support of women's causes throughout her lifetime. She met and married the love of her life, James E. Cufley Jr. as they worked together as administrative law judges for the State of Washington (he died in 2005); in true feminist form she waited 14 years to take his last name. She served as a pro tempore judge throughout King County for 10 years and found the experience exhilarating. Christy went on to establish many leadership roles in her life, including President of the Lake Forest Park Rotary Club ('08-'09) and President of the Point Edwards Homeowner's Association ('12-'13), but none were taken more seriously than her commitment to her children. Her true legacy was her devotion as a full time working mother who came home each night and spent time reading individually to her three children before bedtime, Travis Jo, Colin, and Kimberly. She was deeply satisfied that each of her children later pursued work in public service. An avid musical lover, she knew all of the lyrics to the songs in the Music Man, South Pacific, and Annie Get Your Gun. Some of her fondest memories were travelling abroad with her girlfriends and family, and in her later years, with her steadfast companion and love of 8 years, Ron Buxton. Despite her knack for quick judgments, Christy was in her most natural role when interacting with children. Named later by loved ones as, "the child whisperer," her true magic was in her patience and deep respect for young children, and none gave her more joy than her two grandgirls, Harper and Mabel.

Fare thee well toward "sweet fragrant meadows of dawn and dew." Your three proud children remind you that we love you just as "bottomlessly" as you loved us.

Donations may be made in Christy's name to her favorite charities: NW Planned Parenthood, NARAL, or LFP Rotary.

Christy was always a "light" in all settings. I so enjoyed her love of life and determination to enjoy every minute of it. I will truly miss our deep discussions, She was a good listener and always willing to hear another point of view. She was special and a true friend. I'm so disappointed I missed her service but I believe we will be reunited in eternity. No comfort can be offered to her children as they suffer yet again another loss but know she is always with you. Enjoying your times of laughter and joy and crying and comforting you during your times of disappointment and loss. She truly was a role model for many and will be missed greatly.

Christy was a wonderful human being, a great lawyer, and friend. She expected a lot, but gave a lot in return. My condolences to her family during this sad time. She will be greatly missed.

Very sorry to hear about the passing of my cousin Jim's lovely lady. Jim's happiest times in his life were the years spent with Christie and he and Christie were very proud of Travis Jo, Colin and Kimberly. Christie will be missed by all that knew here.

Christy was a great fan of books and independent bookstores. She would often call and ask to have 3 or 4 copies of a book wrapped and ready to be picked up so she could hand them out to her friends. We at the Edmonds Bookshop will miss her smile.

Christy is/was the cousin I always looked up to... the closest thing to blood sister I had. She was so smart, strong, warm and funny. I idolized her as a child and admired her and her selfless, work as an adult. I wish wed been closer in miles, but we'll never be richer in smiles.
Rest pain free, and peacefully for now, we will play and laugh again one day, but I promise never to make you play board games.
Love you ChristyCuz

Going back the the "Wonder Years".....

Christy was the only person I knew whose Mad Magazine collection was bigger than mine. Her great sense of humor really should have been more "warped" after reading all of those....

I used to love visiting the "Seattle Cousins" and enjoying their (one of the first families to have a) color TV, (many hours playing with the) pool table, and Uncle Al always seemed to have the BEST Hi Fi stereo system. Use to love walking/running/climbing down the hillside to play on the beach along the Puget Sound.

Thanks for being such a great cousin, Christy. Wish I had been able to spend more time with you and your children in the later years.

Love, Brent

After playing a board game with her cousin Bruce, she remarked, "Gamewise, you won, but friendship-wise, it was a tie." She had a great sense of humor. She was like a second daughter to me, as the daughter of my deceased twin sister.

Dear Christy,
We will so miss that beautiful smile ..it was always there whenever we saw you.. We wish so much that we had gotten together much sooner than we did. We really do cherish the times we did have.
Bob and I have great memories of the salmon dinners at Lake Forest Park.
You were so kind to Bob's mother and we will always remember that.

We know you and Jim are together again.
May you rest in peace Christy.

All our love, Bob and Sue
