Corwin Slentz Obituary

Corwin Thomas "Tom" SLENTZ Tom left us peacefully on February 18, 2011, at age 91. He was born in Bellingham, WA, on December 17, 1919, and his strength of character was largely defined by his coming of age during the Great Depression and World War II. After high school Tom's studies at Western Washington College were interrupted by World War II, during which Tom served his country in the Army in the Pacific Theatre. On his return, he began his 42 year career at Pacific Northwest Bell. As in everything he did, Tom's work as an engineer was meticulous, and his reputation for drawing skills was legendary. Tom demonstrated his commitment to serving his community as a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and member of the B.P.O.E. Tom loved the outdoors and the natural beauty of the Northwest. He climbed Mount Baker as a young man and was an avid fisherman. He continued to ski and golf into his eighties. Tom was fortunate to travel widely; his favorite destination was always Kauai, where he went annually with Peggy for 35 years. Tom's greatest source of joy and pride was his family, particularly his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Even as his cognitive abilities declined, he remained an enthusiastic supporter of their every creative, academic, and athletic endeavor. His favorite words of encouragement to all of us were "Keep busy, work hard, and have fun!" Tom is survived by Peggy, his wife of 54 years, daughters Judy Dawson and Linda Wishkoski, son-in-law Michael Wishkoski, and niece Kathleen Brainard. He is also survived by grandchildren Lori (David) Lyon, Lisa (Jon) Usher, Rachel Wishkoski, and Sam Wishkoski, and seven great grandchildren. Tom's kindness and generous spirit resulted in a life richly blessed with many friendships, some of which were lifelong. We appreciate these loyal friends, as well as the kindness and respectful care of the staff at Ida Culver Broadview and Tom's physician, Dr. Robert Haining. A memorial will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, remembrances of Tom may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the charity of your choice.
