Donald A. Calsyn, PhD.

Dr. Donald Arthur Calsyn, age 63, of Lynnwood, passed away in his home on Sunday, February 3, 2013. Don, as he was known to his family and friends, was a loving husband to his wife of 42 years, Teri; a caring father to his sons Jason, Joel, and Ryan; and a joyful grandfather to the family's newest member, Daphnee. He is also survived by five siblings: Alanna, Joan, Gina, Joseph, and James.

Don held a doctoral degree in counseling psychology and was a member of the University of Washington Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences faculty. He also served as the Assistant Director of the Drug Dependency Unit at the Seattle VA Medical Center. He was appointed Director of the Outpatient Services in the Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Healthcare System's Addiction Treatment Center in 1988. He also served as the clinical team leader for opiate agonist treatment for 23 years. In 2004, he retired from the VA but extended his long association with the UW Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute as the substance use and HIV/AIDS expert on the Pacific Northwest Node of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) National Drug Abuse Treatment Clinical Trials Network. Don was considered by colleagues and trainees to be a skilled clinician, a supportive clinical supervisor and mentor, and a productive researcher, He was active as a presenter at national and international conferences of professional psychology, addictions, and HIV/AIDS organizations.

Don loved spending time with family at their vacation condo at Ocean Shores, and traveling to Hawaii and Florida, among other places, with Teri. Don was an avid tennis player and bicyclist, and loved going to the theater and to local sporting events of all kinds. He touched many people in his personal and professional life with his compassion, wisdom, and humor.

The family will be holding a memorial service at the UW Center for Urban Horticulture at 3501 NE 31st St in Seattle at 1 p.m. on Sunday, February 10. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made in Don's name to the Albert and Virginia Calsyn Scholarship in Gerontology at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, One University Blvd., 107 Woods Hall, St. Louis, MO 63121 Attention: Maura Wuellner or by calling (314) 516-5666.
