Doris Nelson Obituary

Doris Isabella Powell Halliday NELSON Doris Nelson went home to her Lord and Savior on March 26, 2011. Doris was born in Seattle on October 24, 1916 to William Henry and Isabella Conway Powell. Doris was a 3rd Generation Washingtonian, granddaughter of a Washington Territory pioneer family (William Wentworth Powell and Isabella Bowden). Her Grandmother was Adelaide Powell Conway Rogers (Mrs. Frank Rogers of Maple Valley, WA). After the untimely death of Doris' Mother in 1927, Doris and some of her siblings were raised at the Martha and Mary Orphanage in Poulsbo, WA. After working outside the orphanage in various doctors' homes as a nanny/housekeeper Doris went to work for the Navy in Texas. She went to work for Pacific Northwest Bell (Now Qwest) after World War II; retiring in 1979 after more than 32 years in various Commercial/Business Office Supervisory positions. Doris was one of the first women to become a supervisor in PNB's Coin Office. She married Ed Halliday in 1947 and assisted in raising histwo daughters Diane Elizabeth Halliday Longyear (Elko NV)and Patricia Louise Halliday Steadman (Huntington Beach CA). Ed died in 1967 at the age of 52. Doris married Andrew Nelson in October 1976. She was very active in West Seattle Art Club, West Seattle Garden Club, West Side Presbyterian Church (Mariners Group) and West Seattle Lions Club and patron of the arts. Doris served as a Founding Member of the Kenney Board of Directors for the Kenney Foundation. Doris and Andy traveled extensively throughout the United States, Mexico, Europe, North Pole, Antarctica, Egypt and Panama Canal. Doris is survived by her loving husband Andrew Nelson, daughters Diane and Pat, nieces Bonny Lou Powell Taylor (Kent WA), Patricia Marie Powell McGuire (Manchester WA); nephew William Ronald Powell (Chehalis WA) and numerous Grandchildren, Great and Great-Great Grandchildren, Great Nieces and Nephews. She was loved and respected by so many. A celebration of Doris' life will be held at West Side Presbyterian Church on Wednesday March 30th at 1:00 p.m. with a reception and food to follow.
