Doris Cooper Obituary

Doris Jeanne (Munz) COOPER Doris Jeanne (Munz) Cooper, 84, passed away with her husband and children by her side on Friday, April 29. She was the first woman mayor of Kirkland and a council member for 20 years, as well as serving on many regional boards. Doris was fiercely loyal, strongly principled and always passionate about her family and community. Doris was a memorable woman who left an impression with people she met and lives she touched. She was an early advocate for preserving Kirkland's waterfront and green spaces and spearheaded and worked on many bond issues to fund the acquisition of park lands. She is survived by her husband, Ralph of 60 years, her children Clifford Cooper, Sarah Cooper and Hannah Coan and six smart grandchildren of whom she was so proud, Carolyn, Jennifer, Liesl, Grady, Lacy and Riley as well as her siblings Shirley Cooper, Frederick Munz and Mike Munz. She is preceded in death by her sister, Phyllis Davis. Doris graduated from the University of Washington where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi and also met her future husband, Ralph, when he was employed as a houseboy at the sorority. A service and celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, June 11th at 1:00 p.m. at Kirkland Congregational Church, 106 - 5th Avenue, followed by a reception at the Kirkland Women's Club at 407 - 1st Street. Family and friends are all welcome. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Hopelink or the Kirkland Heritage Society.

Doris was a pioneer in local politics and service to the community. She was truly a Kirkland local hero and an inspiration for women who have served on the Kirkland City Council since she paved the way. She accomplished so many things that Kirkland citizens now enjoy, including many parks. She was much admired and will always be remembered. My very best wishes to her family and loved ones. May she always be remembered for a life well lived.
