Douglas Maas Obituary

Douglas Duane MAAS Died August 1, 2009 at age 88 in Seattle. Doug was born to Christian Olai and Emma Barr Maas in Seattle in 1921, and grad uated from Franklin High School. Doug studied commercial art at Edison Vocational School, but was forced to postpone his school ing at the outbreak of the Second World War, enlisting in the Merchant Marine and serving in the North Atlantic and the Pacific. After the war, Doug remained in the Philippines where he owned and operated a heavy equipment company for seven years. Doug returned to Seattle in 1953, marrying Phyllis Heady. Doug remained in the Merchant Marine for many years, skipper ing vessels the world over, from breaking through the ice of the Arctic to piloting supplies up the rivers of Vietnam in the midst of the war. Doug's boundless self reliance, indomitable spirit and varied talents are paid testament to by the numerous seascapes and portraits he continued to paint throughout his life, the 65-foot steel-hulled ketch he built in his driveway, and the home he built himself, raised a family in, and in which he eventually passed. Doug and Phyllis were long-time members of the Rainier Beach United Methodist Church. Doug was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Audrey Taylor. He is survived by his wife, children Katherine (Eli Mayer) of Seattle, Christian (Monique) of Center Island, Alexander (Mishelle) of Seattle, grandchil dren Roman Capps (Laura) of Alameda, CA, Nathaniel Mayer, Christian and Ava Maas of Seat tle, nieces and nephews Richard (Fran) Heady of San Diego; Louise (Al) Hughes of Seattle; Scott Taylor of Woodinville, and Janet (Art) Alley of Brier, as well as numerous great-nieces and nephews. A private celebration of his life was held by his family. Remembrances may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
