It is with great fondness that I remember Uncle Ed. He was my great uncle actually, my grandfather's brother-in-law, Aunt Evelyn's husband, cousin Michelle's dad. My memories of Uncle Ed are quite vivid, despite the twenty some years since I last visited with him. When I was a child we spent many a Christmas and summer holiday visiting the Pugel family. Our trips to the large Pugel home on Queen Ann's Hill were a time of great anticipation for me. The oldest Pugel "Cousin" was just a year younger than my father, and the youngest of the eight childen was just a year older than me. Their parents, Uncle Ed and Aunt Evelyn were the best things in life next to warm peach cobbler and Mother Hockett, Aunt Evelyn's revered mother. Uncle Ed would stand in the entry way to their lively home and greet us warmly as we arrived from our long drive. His eyes were always full of mischief and merriment. His smile was broad, friendly, and self-assured. He gave big hugs and twinkled, and I liked that. Uncle Ed was loads of fun and would tease unmercifully, but he was also strict, so I was not one to want to cross him. His voice was firm when he wanted his youngest daughter, Michelle, and I to know he meant business about what we were allowed to do and where we were allowed to go. I knew he cared about us and was concerned for our welfare, but also wanted us to have adventures and enjoy ourselves. When we came home after riding bikes he would be in the kitchen by the back door as we walked in. He would listen attentively, while grinning, as we told him about speeding up and down the hills, who we had visited and what we had seen along the way. Speaking of the kitchen, I remember that Uncle Ed liked food, not just to eat it, but also to help prepare it. As I recall, he was quite particular about the preparation, too, but as always, with wit and a twinkle. Goodbye Uncle Ed, you were a good uncle and will always be a shining star among my childhood memories.
Most sincerely and with love,

Greetings, Pugel Cousins & Echo,
I have many fond memories from my youth of Ed's hospitality, optimism and good humor. I'm saddened by his loss for all of us who love him, but I'm also grateful in the knowledge that he is home in paradise and we will be with him again.
May God comfort you in extraordinary ways during this time of loss and mourning.

What a guy.
Ed taught me the meaning of being an attentive, opinionated father, which may be the greatest expression of love possible. Never shy with advice, Ed always gave you wisdom and commentary in spades.
We will miss you, big guy. Hope the soup isn't too hot for you.

I am a colleague and friend of Katie Pugel and just recently heard of Ed's passing. I am so sorry for the family's loss. I know that the strong bond of the entire Pugel family will prove a comfort in the difficult days ahead. My sincere condolences to you all.

Dear Cousins, My thoughts and prayers are with you all now and in the sad days to come. Your dad was the poster boy for the "Greatest Generation" rising from the poverty of the Great Depression and into service and sacrifice for country during the World Warr II. Ed returned to become an outstanding husband and father instaiiling the lessons concerning what is really important to be a successful human being. God and family were the center of his universe yet he always had time for needy friends and neighbors, and especially his large extended family. Coming to stay in Ed's and Evelyn's Queen Ann home was better than a trip to Disneyland! Memories of car trips packed into the back of station wagons (the trip always beginning with a Rosary), his infectious laugh, the wonderful stories that kept us all enthralled, and his famous strudel pulled out on the top of the round oak table where later its aroma would fill the house will forever be a part of the stories I share. Uncle Ed, you will be missed and we know that you have already taken chage in heaven and have things flowing much more smoothly!

The most incredible saleman and upbeat person I had the pleasure of working with. When we at Oberto Sausage Co. were not large enough to purchase our custom boxes Ed would supply us with used boxes. He knew we would someday need are own. He treated us like we were special. We always looked forward to Ed's visits. His jokes, family updates, sports stories and of course his box of matches. Ed was a friend, mentor, and one of the very special people in my business career. MY sincere sympathy to the Pugel Family.

To Ed's family I feel a loss with Ed's passing thoughI haven't seen Ed in years. Ed had a indirect thought about me
when I left the Longview Fibre for employment as a computer programer in California. He wished me the best. I saw him only one time after those years but
did not forget him aa a friend. God Bless him.

It was an honor to know Ed. One of the kindest memories I have of him occured upon the passing of my own husband. While having dinner with Chris and Walt,Ed and I were sitting out in the back yard alone together. He talked about how hard it was to lose a spouse. We both cried as he told me that he would always love Evelyn and that one day they would be together again. Say "hi" to Harry for me, Ed.

A few days ago, the news about Edward Pugel's death reached us here in Slovenia, Europe, as well. I am speaking on behalf of all the Slovene branch of the Pugel family and we would like to express our deepest condolences to Ed's children and grandchildren.
My first memories of Ed go as far back as 1982 when Ed and his wife Evelyn first visited Slovenia, at that time still part of former Yugoslavia. At 15, I couldn't fully appreciate the importance of his visit, however I did understand it meant a great deal to my mum and my aunts. I can still clearly remember their excitment.
Several years later, Ed visited again, the second time around he brought his dear friends Harrold (Dubby) and Rita with him. This time, we would greet each other as close friends and relatives.
I can tell Ed was a family man. How do I know that? Ever since his first visit, he would send a X-mas card year after year, enclosing each card a long letter. In those letters, he would let us know about all major milestones, achievements and whereabouts of you, his beloved children and grandchildren. He would always speak of you with greates possible love and affection. So over the years, my mum has created quite a comprehensive photo album of you, guys. So Tom, Dan, Cathy, Beth, Anne, Chris, Michelle ... it feels like we've known you pretty well, although we've never had a chance to meet. Well, not quite, as we did get a chance to meet some of you. First it was Dan, who visited with Pooh. Then, NIcole and her family (husband, daughter, brothers and grandparents) paid a visit. And finally, two years ago, Mary Lou and Ed Gallagher came to visit us. All of you are fantastic people!
30 years ago, Ed started the most wonderful thing; he created this invisible thread that has been connecting us, even though we live thousands of miles appart. I'm no longer 15 and now I can fully appreciate the fact that there's a huge Pugel family over there, across the Ocean. So please, let's not break this connection, let's make it stronger. For Ed's and our sake.
On behalf of us, the Pugels in Slovenia, I'm sending you our warmest wishes and we all will remember Ed in our prayers.

Ed,Evey and all the girls were extra special to us,because we chose to adopt them as our big sisters and our Grandparents. We lived across the alley on Queen Anne Hill and were always coming over to pester them all and poke around. Ed was ALWAYS such a sweet, smiley, good looking fellow- who would endlessly kid us little kids. I know my mother looked to Evelyn for good advice on parenting. We will always hold all the Pugels in our good childhood memories. Love to all of you, and thank you for all you have always done for our family. Lil Meggy Coulter

My deepest sympathies to all of you. I'll miss the twinkle in his eye and his funny jokes. He was a fun uncle to grow up with. I have so many fond memories of visiting the Queen Anne Pugels. I'm sure there will be many more Pugel reunions in the future but Ed will be dearly missed from them. Blessing on you all.

Uncle Ed and Auntie Evelyn always showered me with love, hugs and smiles. I never visited their home without knowing I was loved; just these simple acts of kindness and words of encouragement were all I needed to help brighten my world. Thank you Uncle Ed for your beaming smile and your ready hugs! I will always love you!

Uncle Ed is a very large feature in the Hockett family. Visiting the Pugels in Seattle was always a great treat each summer. Uncle Ed was always so full of life and always had a quick joke and a special twinkle in his eye. Rueben sandwiches at the big round table, clam digging, and trips to Sun Lakes fill our memories.

It's unfortunate Ed wasn't able to attend Nick and Nicole's wedding, we were so looking forward to meeting him, but by having the pleasure of getting to know Nick and his family we feel as if we knew him ourselves. It is certainly more than luck that Ed has such wonderful friends and family to keep the memories of him alive. You all will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Growing up at St Anne's Chris and I were close friends. I remember many Friday nights spending the night at the Pugel's and Mr Pugel was always so kind to me.
I would not see him for YEARS and yet when I would see him at an event he ALWAYS knew my name! (There are 5 of Boyle girls and some relatives STILL call us by the wrong name.)
He was so "charming" and as a young girl I may have had a little crush on Christine's Dad. (smile)
I am sorry to all the Pugel kids for your loss but hope you have comfort knowing he's now with your Mom and many, many others who loved him. Must have been one big reunion up there!
Love to you all, especially, Chris.

Our family has treasured, life-long memories of Uncle Ed, Aunt Evelyn, and our Pugel "Cousins" as they have always been referred to. Uncle Ed was the first to let me drive his car, while I sat on his lap behind the wheel in Longview. Several years later, my folks and brother and sister and I always eagerly anticipated visiting our family, the Pugels on Queen Anne Hill, in Seattle ... an official permanent address we could refer to as our home, while our dad changed military assignments frequently. Some years after Betty and I married in 1962 and our children were old enough to know the joy of visiting Uncle Ed and his family on Queen Anne, Ed and Evelyn moved to Magnolia, and we visited them there (see picture). We always knew Uncle Ed as a wonderful family man and a fine professional who loved sports, especially baseball which he played very well. We certainly enjoyed his great wit and humor. Admirably, he thoughtfully called and wished me well on my retirement in Ohio in 2004. We will miss Uncle Ed.
Our love and sincere sympathy to all the Pugel family.

Back in the mid 60's when I first started in business working for my father he put me in charge of buying boxes for his cannery in Alaska. Ed Pugel was the supplier for the boxes and That never changed when I took over the buying. He was such a kind person and I will always remember the lunches he treated me to at the Elks Club. I may not have realized it at the time but looking back I can see that he was a role model for me.
