Elizabeth Stafford Obituary

Elizabeth G. STAFFORD Age 89 passed away on June 4, 2008 in Roseville, MN. Betty was born December 29, 1918 in Spokane, WA to Albert Wright Greenwell, M.D. and Hazel Jane Dart. She was married to Charles H. Banks, Col. US Army and later to Charles F. Stafford, Supreme Court Justice, State of Washington. Betty traveled extensively through out the three chapters of her life --- while growing up in the military, while married in the military and for her own adventure and pleasure in later years. She graduated with a B.A. degree from Whitman College in 1939 where she was a member of Delta Gamma. In later years while living in Oklahoma, she earned a Masters of Library Science degree from the University of Oklahoma and then became employed as a librarian at the Tulsa Public Library. Betty was active in the Unitarian Church, the League of Women Voters and the Women's University Club of Seattle and was an avid duplicate bridge player. She enjoyed travel, theater, opera, animated political discussions and spending time with her faithful cat, Kira. She is survived by her two daughters, Sally Wilson of MN and Katharyn Banks of NJ, two stepdaughters, Joan Halverstadt of WA and Katherine Schmidt of OR, 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. She leaves behind many wonderful friends especially the family of Robert Rose of Olympia, WA. We have all been warmed by her charm and touched by her firm and righteous convictions and we will all miss her love, intelligence, fierce independence and tremendous spirit. Burial will be at Anacortes, WA. Memorials preferred to the Charles F. Stafford Scholarship Fund, Whitman College, Walla Walla, WA 99362 or Planned Parenthood or Hospice. We all appreciated the way Betty actively reached out to our extended family after she married Charles Stafford in 1981.

Personally, I was grateful to Betty for the love and devotion she showed him during his last illness.

Betty was such a lovely lady. The earth is a sadder place without her.
