Evelyn Christopher Obituary

Evelyn M. (Wood) Christopher, 87, died peacefully on May 6, 2011 at Mt. Baker Care Center, Bellingham, Washington.

Mrs. Christopher was born on October 30, 1923 in Wainwright, Alberta, Canada to George and Adelaide (Robinson) Neidrick. While working for the US Navy in Prince Rupert, BC. during World War II, she met and married David Wood in 1943, after which, she moved to Seattle and became a naturalized citizen in 1959. She spent most of her life in the Seattle area, but spent 1969 to 1979 in Anchorage, Alaska.

During her time in Alaska, Evelyn became the first woman to be appointed as a "special agent" in the history of the Continental Insurance Company. As a liaison between Alaska and Seattle, she traveled the state despite her fear of flying. Never one to let fears stop her, she overcame that fear by taking flying lessons and flying often with her then husband, Jim Christopher. Following her years in the insurance industry, she and her husband Jim became the owners of Alaska Towing and Wrecking and also purchased the town of Cantwell Alaska.

Evelyn moved back to Seattle in 1984 and retired from Continental Insurance in 1985. She was a lifetime member of the American Legion Women's Auxiliary where she was a past president of University Post #11 Auxiliary in Seattle.

Her family wrote, ""Mom was a pioneer who grew up attending a one room schoolhouse in northern Canada and eventually rose to become an outstanding business executive. She was a great mom and inspiring role model who will live in our hearts forever."

She is survived by her five sons and their spouses, David Wood, Sun City West, AZ; Donald and Judy Wood, Midland, TX.; Robert Wood and Rod Villa, San Mateo, CA; Jim and Jo Wood, Eagle River, AK; and Jeff and Mary Jo Wood, Bellevue, WA; grandchildren, John Wood, Suzy Wood, Rebecca (Wood) and Chris Pouliot, Jacob and Heather Wood, Shannan King, Kim (Wood) and Brian Nevels, Jeff Wood, Jr., and Kristen Wood; and great-grandchildren, Evan King and Marie Therese Wood.

A memorial service will be held at Greenwood Memorial Park in Renton, WA on Sat, May 14th at 11am.
