Evelyne Poole Barrows Obituary

Evelyne Poole and

Eleanore BARROWS

Evelyne Poole and her identical twin sister Eleanore Barrows are being remembered this weekend, both having recently passed away.

The twins were born on November 25, 1916, on the then military base on Angel Island near San Francisco. Their father George Winter was a career military warrant officer, who served with Roosevelt's Rough Riders and later played in the Army band directed by John Phillips Sousa.

Growing up, the twins moved from base to base and in each instance quickly became the darlings of the base. Their mother, Frieda, had the girls help raise English bulldogs. When their Father retired, they moved to a strawberry farm in Puyallup. They graduated from Puyallup High in 1934. That summer, their father bought a house 3 blocks from the University of Washington where the Twins were newly enrolled. They both received their B.A.'s in English from the UW in 1938 and both went on to earn Law degrees in 1940, and B.A.'s in Law Librarianship in 1941. Evelyne & Eleanore Winter were both members of Phi Delta Delta, womens' legal honorary. Evelyne was admitted to the Bar in 1940.

Eleanore worked from 1945-1951 at the Seattle Veterans Administration, where she met and married William Barrows, a WW II veteran and also an attorney. She then worked at the Bank of California in the Escrow & Probate Dept. from 1953-1963.

Thereafter 1963 until her retirement in 1985, Eleanore was a research Law Librarian at the University of WA Gallagher Law Library.

Evelyne Winter married Merton (Bud) Poole in 1942. They were stationed in Texas where Bud served in the Army until 1945. They came back and settled in Tacoma, ultimately moving to Dash Point. Evelyne became the Headquarters Librarian for the Pierce County Rural Library System until they started their family. Evelyne spent the rest of her life devoted to her family.

After the deaths of their spouses, the twins purchased a house together in Seattle, where they spent their last 20 plus years traveling and being each other's best friend. Evelyne and Eleanore both were volunteer tutors for Washington Literacy from 1987-1993.

They are survived by Evelyne's son Jeff, her daughter Jenifer, her daughter in law Jeanne and her three grandchildren, Sarah, Elizabeth, and Daniel.

The Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, June 29th from 12-3 pm at Ray's Boathouse on Shilshole.
