Florence Irene Tenneson Obituary
Florence Irene Tenneson

On May 5, 2018, Irene passed away at Living Springs memory care facility in Post Falls, ID. She put on her perfect heavenly body to rest for eternity in the presence of God. She entered the world on June 17, 1925, to the delight of her parents, John and Eunice (Howton) Shimek, who were farmers in Lind, Washington. She joined her older sister Roberta, her brother Jack and youngest sister Mary Alice.

The family eventually built a home in town where Irene attended school and met her forever sweetheart, Harry Tenneson. Upon graduation, she enrolled at Deaconess Nursing School and graduated just in time to welcome Harry back from World War II. They were married shortly after and their careers took them to Spokane, Washington and then to Seattle, Washington. In 1950 David was born and Jane (Bihary) followed a couple of years later.

Although Irene disliked her first name (Florence) it perfectly characterized her career as a nurse. She joined the nursing staff at Children's Orthopedic Hospital in pediatric oncology where she helped organize the hematology clinic which eventually led to the forming of a children's oncology department. She was instrumental in the pursuit of a Ronald McDonald House in the Seattle area which was helped along by family ties with Washington Senator Henry M. (Scoop) Jackson. She was also involved with the organizing Camp Goodtimes, a children's cancer summer camp on Vashon Island, Washington, and later a second camp in Spokane, Washington. Irene made many lifetime friends and touched many families during the course of her career.

Irene was preceded in death by Harry and her parents and siblings. She is survived by her son, David (Kerrin) Tenneson, a daughter, Jane (Chris) Bihary and their children Paul (Amy) Franklin-Bihary, Josh (Rachel Ragland) Bihary, Laura Tenneson, Elise Tenneson, and Matt Tenneson

and great grandchildren Ellie Franklin-Bihary, Penny Franklin-Bihary and Harvey Nielson.

Donations to the / Camp Goodtimes Fund would be a wonderful way to remember Irene. The family will hold a private memorial service.
