George Allen Thomas

George Thomas of Seattle died on July 18, 2013 after a long battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Cathleen Hansel, of Vancouver, WA, and their children Benjamin Hansel, Mark Hansel and Catherine Hansel. He also leaves behind children from previous marriages: Steve Thomas (Linda) of Greendale, WI, Chris Thomas of Scott's Valley, CA, Jeff Thomas (Megan) of Gilbert, AZ and Lauren Garrison (Chris) of Gardnerville, NV. George is also survived by a sister, Jane Zickert (Carl) of Redlands, CA, a brother, Fred Thomas, of Plymouth, MN, and fourteen grandchildren.

George was born on September 25th, 1935 in Beloit, WI and graduated from Beloit College. Early in his career he taught speech and drama at Beloit College, the University of Washington and as an associate professor at Arizona State University. Some of the numerous theater, TV and movie positions he held included: Chief Stage Setter at the Expo'67 Autostade, Stage Manager for ABC Sports at the 1972 Olympics, and Set Decorator for the second Dick Van Dyke show. George started his own theater consulting business, GTA Associates, and designed innovations that are incorporated into Phoenix Symphony Hall and many college and high school theaters.

In 1980, George moved back to the Northwest. He continued his stagecraft career with IATSE Local 15 (Seattle, WA) and Local 28 (Portland, OR) until 2010. George had an appreciation for travel, fine arts, international culture, outdoors, literature, and history. His family would like to thank his friends, coworkers, and care team for their contributions to his life.

A memorial service will be held on July 25th 2:30 p.m. at Washington Care Center, 282 S. Walden in Seattle.
