George C. Whitman

George C. Whitman of Hansville, born to Charles C. and Addie L. Whitman in West Seattle on January 23, 1927, died in Poulsbo on October 4, 2013, following a long illness with Alzheimer's disease. Predeceased by his wife, Gloria A. Whitman (September 11, 2013); their son, DeWitt C. Whitman (March 17, 2013); and, his only sibling, DeWitt J. Whitman (April 7, 1988). Survivors include three sons; James R. Hunter (Cheryl Vance) of Bainbridge, Terry A. Whitman (Carol Drummond) of Burlington, and G. Matthew Whitman of Haines, AK. Also survived by five grandchildren; G. Scott and Margaux A. Hunter, Jason A. Whitman, Melissa and Andrew C. Whitman; and, two great-grandchildren; Sara M. Whitman, and Ada J. Whitman. George also leaves behind life-long friends, Floyd and Maureen Claggett of Bellevue.

George joined the Coast Guard in 1943, serving as a Signalman during WWII, and subsequently serving briefly in the Navy. Then in 1953 when the City of Bellevue formed its police department, George became Bellevue's second police officer. He retired as Deputy Chief in 1973. George was also President of the Washington Police Officers Association (1961-62) and Director of the Pacific Northwest Division of the National Ski Patrol (1983-1989).

Private family service with burial at Tahoma National Cemetery. No flowers by request. Arrangements through the Stone Chapel in Poulsbo.
