George Edward Abid, Sr.

George Edward Abid, Sr., of Mitchellville MD passed away on Tuesday, December 10, 2013.

Beloved father of George Edward (Catherine Yale) Abid Jr, Joanne (Suppa) Danielson and Nicholas Lee (Wendy Skinner) Abid; Grandfather of Bridget and Holly Abid, Ralph Anthony Suppa and Cole, Emma and Paige Abid.

George was born in a small mining town in Roslyn, WA on June 13th 1924. He joined the Navy and spent two years in Pearl Harbor. After his enlistment he and Irene Danielson were married in June, 1942 and moved East to Washington DC. Prior to working for NASA he served as the Boeing Company Field Representative, Electro-Mechanical Ordinance Division for the National Bureau of Standards. George then went on to serve as Sr Administrator/Management Representative as representative in residence for the Nimbus Weather Satellite Project, Manned Flight Support and Space Sciences Programs. He continued as Assistant to the Director of Sciences and retired from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. He eventually retired a second time after recurring positions with several federal contractors.

George was an avid golfer and spent as much time as possible on courses in Maryland, VA, PA, SC, TX, CA and Washington.

Over the years George and Irene would travel back to Seattle to visit family and friends. Even though they lived in MD they were always Seattlians at heart.

George and Irene lived in Silver Spring up until November of 2006, when they moved to Collington in Mitchellville MD. Irene passed in May 2007.

George became well known and loved for his warm smile and charming personality.

George instilled strong values of trust and integrity in his children and grandchildren. "Have a firm handshake and look people in the eye" was his favorite doctrine.

George fought long and hard over the last 8 months from injuries sustained from a car accident in January of 2013.

He will be greatly missed by his family and friends who are many.

Internment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
