George G. Sloan Jr. USCG, Retired
George Sloan passed away on 11/11/2014 after a long battle with lung cancer.
George was born 5/23/1930 in Seattle, Washington. In 1948, upon turning 18, he immediately enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. George had the honor of serving aboard the Coast Guard Cutters, Northwind, Wachusett, Klamath, Winona and Storis during various sea duty tours in his earlier years in the service. During the span of his Coast Guard career, he also served at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut and the USCG Training Center in Cape May, New Jersey. He retired as a Chief Petty Officer after serving his country for 20 years.
After his retirement from the Coast Guard at age 38, he started a new career with the King County Assessor as an auditor appraiser. It was here that he met his future wife, Ruth Holland. After 24 years with the assessor he retired in 1992. George was a life member of Greenwood Lodge #253 F. & A.M., Scottish Rite, Nile Shriners and Amethyst Chapter #138 OES.
George is survived by his wife Ruth, his step-daughters Janis Gaiter, Beverly Bennet, 2 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Viewing will be on Tuesday 11/18/14 from 3 to 6pm. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, 11/19/2014 at 11am, both at Yahn & Son Funeral Home. Committal Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. at Tahoma National Cemetery.
