Gordon Higgins Obituary

Gordon HIGGINS Passed away on April 28, 2011, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He lived his final years with grace and good humor showing other cancer victims - and everyone around him - that the disease does not condemn them to a life of worry and fear. Gordon was born November 28, 1934, one of eight children to Con and Laura Higgins in Titonka, Iowa, and was raised in Whittemore, Iowa, which is known for its great high school baseball teams. Gordon was on two teams that went to the state finals. He graduated from Presentation Academy in 1952 as class valedictorian, then joined the Navy, serving three years as an Aviation Electronics Technician. Gordon met Delores at community college in Emmetsburg, Iowa in 1957 and knew that he had found the love of his life. The kids came along soon thereafter and family was the center of their lives. Camping trips with friends to Lake Chelan and Hood Canal, a timeshare at Chelan, a cabin on Camano, and finally wintering in Phoenix were highlights during the off-time. When the grandchildren arrived they joined the vacation fun and were the light of Grandpa's life. Gordon is survived by his wife, Delores; son, Jeffrey, and his family; daughter, Michele, and her family; son, Rick; and daughter, Christie, and her family; as well as sisters-in-law, Carol Higgins, Ruth Higgins and Idell Higgins; and, nieces and nephews in Virginia, Illinois, Iowa, Oregon and California. A Vigil service will be held Friday, May 6th, at 7:00 pm, and a Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, May 7th, at 10:30 am BOTH at St. Luke Catholic Church, 322 North 175th St, Shoreline, WA 98133. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to St. Vincent de Paul, St. Luke Chapter or to the St. Luke School Scholarship Fund, 322 North 175th St. Shoreline, WA 98133. Higgins family-Rick and I were great friends growing up. Gord would always find a way to add humor into anything you were doing. Such a nice family. My thoughts are with you during this time.

I was very saddened to learn of your dad last night; he's been in my thoughts and prayers since hearing the news.
Some of my fondest holiday memories are intertwined with your family - sharing Thanksgiving at the Beach and listening to your and my dad tell stories with Grandpa Bill on the couch. He was a special person and will be missed and often remembered.

Dear Higgins Family,
I was saddened to hear of Gordon passing. I will remember him as a colleague but more significantly as a friend. I'm sorry for your loss.

My deepest sympathy for the passing of your Father. Gordon had a great sense of humor and a calm inner strength. I remember fondly accompanying your family one summer to the "Canal". It was one of the best weeks in my life. You have a wonderful family and thank you for sharing your family's friendship with me. My heart and prayers are with all of you.

Our best wishes to the Higgins family! Most, I believe, would say Gordon was "one of the hardest-working people ever." I would add the word "selfless" to that--"one of the hardest-working and most selfless people ever."

Uncle Gord will be missed. He and Dee were always here for our family after the loss of our mom. It is with peace in my heart that I say that I know Virginia was there to greet him in Heaven. Dee, Jeff, Rick, Michelle, Christie - you are in our thoughts and prayers. We wish we could be there with you during your time of loss.

Our heartfelt sympathy and condolences go out to the Higgins family. Gordon was such a kind and gentle man. He and Dee were faithful and dedicated parishioners in St Luke Parish.

We know our Lord will provide Gordon with a peaceful resting place in heaven --- which he so much deserves.

May peace be with Gordon and all his family.

Since January 1965 I have known and respected Gordon Higgins. First as a business competitor and then as a good friend. Friends are hard to lose, rest in peace Gordon.
