I was always surprised by Grace's strength and sense of adventure. She was a single mother during the depression, a huge accomplishment. She had seen so much of the world change and evolve in her lifetime. But then when everyone else her age was retiring, she was still working and volunteering to help others- a woman with a very strong work ethic and strong political convictions, a woman I am proud to call my grandmother. She will be dearly missed.

While I never had the privledge of knowing or meeting Grace, I know that if she was half as nice as my friends Deri and Mari....well she had to be a very special person indeed! Thoughts and prayers to her family

I am Michael FitzPatrick. My wife, Miriam, and I publish a newspaper in the Pike Place Market and met Grace when she was 97. We published an article on her, but during the interview process we fell in love with her. (We re-wrote and updated the article when she turned 100.)
What an incredible woman she was. Amazingly sharp at 100, she once told us she would have her caregiver read all of the articles in our publication to her and describe the photos on the pages.
She was ever so kind to us and often told us how much she loved us both. This meant a lot to us and we will miss her warmth and candor.

I remember Aunt Grace's birthday two years ago...she was still at The Heritage House down in the Pike Place Market. A lot of the family went down for the Christmas parade and tree lighting at Westlake Center. We decided to visit Aunt Grace in between events, with twelve of us we had to visit in shifts. Aunt Grace loved seeing everyone and knew who everyone was and asked questions of all. I took four different groups up to her room as the rest strolled through the market. She was visited by three great nieces, two great great nieces, and even a great great great niece!!! A great great nephew and great great great nephew too!!! I will always remember going to See Aunt Grace just after she died and hearing her clock play "Amazing Grace"

She truly was amazing!!!

Grace was the nicest, kindest and most thoughtful person we knew. I met Grace about 25 years ago when I worked at the Seattle School District and she would come there for the Spice program. We had many wonderful talks when I drove her home or talked on the phone. She was always so excited when we visited her at Pike Place Heritage House and the Shoreline Adult facility, especially when we brought our grandchildren, Amalie and Andrew. Every time I hear the songs she loved to sing, I think of her. It was an honor and privilege to know Grace. She shared so many of her memories with us, we felt like she was part of our family. She will be dearly missed by all of us.

I will forever cherish the memories I have of visiting with Grace, as they were always cheerful, and warm. Her love radiated through her smile, her ability to illustrate interest in what ever you had going on in "your world",and her typical response of "I'll be darned" to stories/events being told to her. I will always remember the treasures found in the infamouse "junk droor" and the candy/cookies that would somehow make their way home with you.
Grace (grandma), and her son Joe (papa), will forever reside in memories I hold dear.

I have so many memories of Grace thru the years...but, probably my favorite is Grace ....in her Red Cross uniform, standing beside her ambulance, I think that she really enjoyed that job!
On Grace's 105th birthday, she asked me......as she did many times......How can YOU be 80??? HOW did you get so old..??? I do not think that she ever thought of Herself as old....neither did we!
I will miss Her very much......a last link with my childhood.....
Thanks for the Memories.......

What a long and amazing life with such clear memories she had of times that were truly turning points in history, from a woman's perspective. I am very happy to have had the visit with her last May at Pike's Providence Care. A life well lived. My mother was her 1st cousin Carmel Koen's (Greenwood) and had always kept in close contact over the years with stories of her uncle- Grace's father.

Grace was always able to spot when someone might need a feeling of acceptance; that she really cared about you. And when you shared a story with her she would say things like "isn't that wonderful" or "isn't that amazing". It was always exciting to go and visit Grace whether it was at her apartment at Bitter Lake in Seattle, the Heritage House or the Shoreline Adult Family Home. She told her great great grandsons Riley & Logan that a mermaid out in Puget Sound had her teeth. their eyes got so big and then they laughed.Grace, my grandma for 33 years.

So many memories of Grandma Grace...visiting the house on Queen Ann where she always had a place of goodies, sleeping in the attic room...helping her serve meals to the homeless at a church...how she always had little gifts for everyone who came to visit...the wonderful (but strange) boxes of goodies she sent to us when we lived in 'bush' Alaska...her love of Heritage House and the Pike Place Market. Many many more memories, thank you Grace!

I had the pleasure of meeting Grace a few times. We were at the Centenarian Tea at the Washington Talking Book & Braille Library, held each year the day before Mothers Day. She was a true inspiration and we will miss seeing her smile this coming May.

Grace was my mothers sister (my aunt). I remember one thanksgiving at Grace's house that included a dribble glass, a fake fly in the butter, and a whoopee cushion. I also remember a beautiful down quilt for my bed that came from Seattle Quilt when Grace was working there.
