Harry Dufraine "Duff" SUTHERLAND Harry Dufraine "Duff" Sutherland passed away March 19th in Seattle, Washington at the age of 83. He was born March 5th 1928 in Bellingham, Washington to Dr. Harry George Sutherland and Mildred Claire (Dufraine) Sutherland. Duff graduated from St. John Military Academy in Delafield, Wisconsin and then went on to attend the University of Washington. Throughout his life, his love for the open waters remained a constant. Yachting was more than a weekend hobby, it is what defined him most. He was an avid yachtsman and traveler. He was a captain on and off the water. In his most recent travels, with his wife, Ann Sutherland, they traveled to Portugal, Morocco and the Canary Islands. Woodworking was another love of Duff's and you can find many of his carvings displayed in the homes of his children and grandchildren. Duff put his knowledge of boats and the water to use working in the insurance field as a maritime adjustor. He also was a life time member of the Honorable Order of the Blue Goose International and the Bellingham Yacht Club where he presided as the past Commodore. He was a member of the Clan Sutherland Society of North America. Duff is survived by his wife Ann Sutherland of Newcastle, Wa, his sister Patricia Carver (Gene) of Palos Verdes, California, children, Tim Sutherland of Acme, Peter (Kim) Sutherland, Lisa Sutherland Hamstreet of Bellingham, Trish Sutherland Thomas (Mark) of Whitehall, Michigan, Wendy Sutherland Nachtsheim (Chris) of Bonney Lake and his step-children Lori Claffey and Stefanie Johnson of North Bend. He leaves 15 grandchildren and 3 great-grand children. He is predeceased by his infant son, Steven Allen Sutherland in 1953. His family and a great many people will sorely miss him. A man is measured by the love in the hearts of the people that they leave behind. A memorial service will be held at 1:00pm April 16th at St. Pauls Episcopal Church in Bellingham. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or St. Pauls Endowment Fund. "A Scots Farewell" (unknown author) When I come to the end of the road And the sun has set for me I want no tears in a gloom-filled room. Why cry for a soul set free? Miss me a little but not for long And not with your head bowed low. Remember the love that we once shared Miss me, but let me go. For this is a journey we all must take And each must go alone. It's all part of the master plan A step on the road to home. When you are lonely and sick of heart, Go to the friend we know And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds. Miss me.... but let me go.To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.
