Jane Veith Obituary

Jane L. VEITH With love beyond the stars, those of us who treasured Jane said good-bye on May 15, 2011, as she passed from this earthly life peacefully at home due to complications after her years of living in a wheelchair with a spinal cord injury from an auto accident in 1993. She touched so many lives with her unforgettable smile, delightful sense of humor, her enduring courage, intelligence, affection, and grace. Following her injury, she truly re-entered the world with her devoted and loving service dog Ellijay at her side and volunteered in roles as diverse as helping new elementary school readers and those in hospice. After Ellijay retired, Jane was only beginning in the first months of partnership with her new assistance dog Edward. Jane was born in Englewood, New Jersey, in December 1952, and graduated from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. She was then awarded a Watson Fellowship and studied animal behavior for a year at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. Next came graduate school, as she completed her doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Ohio State University. Jane then joined the Psychology faculty at Washington State University as an assistant professor. She then came to Seattle and was a post-doctorate fellow at the University of Washington before entering private practice. She is survived by her husband Michael Kippes of Redmond, her sister Nancy Veith of Los Altos, CA, her cousins Wendy Grant Walter of Seattle, Janet Barkow of Bozeman, MT, and Doug Grant of Winnetka, IL, step-mother JoAnn Veith of Lake Wylie, SC, step-sister Kim Missigman of Charlotte, NC, and two step-nieces and a step-nephew. We are grateful to the innumerable health care professionals who tirelessly looked after Jane's care through the years.A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, June 5, at 2:00 PM at the Redmond Senior Center, 8703 160th Ave. NE. In lieu of flowers, please direct donations to Canine Companions for Independence at www.cci.org.

Jane inspired and educated me. She read the most interesting books and shared her viewpoint. She was passionate about Canine Companions for Independence and was their true advocate. I so enjoyed getting to know her. Her sense of humor was terrific! She will be missed but not forgotten. My sincere condolences to her family and wonderful husband, Michael.
