Janina Prot-Wald Obituary

Janina PROT-WALD Janina Prot-Wald died in Seattle May 16, 2011. Born in Poland February 8th, 1926, Jana was a Holocaust survivor. She spent the war in Warsaw working for the Polish resistance and was a field medic during the Warsaw Uprising. After the war, she finished her medical studies in Wroclaw and then worked at the Neurologic Clinic at the Warsaw Medical Academy. She moved to the U.S. in 1971 and practiced primary care and neurology near Boston. In Warsaw, and subsequently in Lexington, Massachusetts, she was active in Polish intellectual circles. After retirement she relocated to Seattle to live next to her daughter and grandchildren. Charming and beautiful, she had an extraordinary ability to make friends with everyone she came in contact with. She was courageous, principled and devoted to her family and friends. Jana is survived by her brother Tomasz (Eliza), daughter Anna (Joel), son John (Storm), niece Kasia (Michal) and grandchildren to whom she was devoted, Ari, Eli, Mara, Scott, and Leila. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Joshua. Graveside service has been held. In lieu of flowers please consider donations to Planned Parenthood or World Federation of Jewish Child Survivors of the Holocaust.
