John F. Gemmill Obituary
John F. Gemmill

John Fullerton Gemmill was born December 23, 1923, and passed away December 15, 2012. He is survived by his loving wife, Jo Ann G. Gemmill; his three sons, Terry and his wife Bonnie, Tim, and Bob and his wife Jo; six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. His first wife, and the mother of his children, Carol D. Farris, passed away in 1994.

John, who liked to be called by his nickname Jack, was the youngest of five children born in Seattle to Ralph A. Gemmill and Katherine L. Shea. He entered the insurance business in 1946 after returning from Europe at the conclusion of World War II. After nearly 15 years in the claims end of the business with SAFECO, Allstate, and Preferred Insurance Exchange, Jack started his own insurance general agency in 1960. And by 1963, his company now known as Insurance Management Inc., was synonymous with high-risk automobile insurance. In 1976, he purchased control of a Seattle-based insurer, Federated American Insurance. Co., and by 1980, Jack started a direct-writer, low-cost auto insurer, Rainier Insurance. Co, which was renamed National Merit Insurance. Co. in 1984. He retired from active management in 1987 and turned the operations of his companies over to his three sons.

Jack was well respected and liked in business circles as well as among his friends on the golf course and during his many fishing trips. He and Carol, and in later years Jo Ann, enjoyed yachting along the Washington and British Columbia coasts. He was an active member of the Edmonds Yacht Club and the Inglewood Golf Club for many years. Jack's interests were many, including reading, travel, current events, politics, economics, and get-togethers with family and friends. Although his main residence was in Edmonds, since the 1980's his winters were spent in Palm Springs, California, playing golf and enjoying the warm weather.

A memorial service will be held on January 15, 2013, at 10:00 AM, at Beck's Funeral Home, 405 Fifth Avenue South, Edmonds, Washington 98020. Remembrances may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project, Topeka, KS.
