John Sutphin TYTUS Dr. John S. Tytus passed away peacefully at home, May 31, 2011. He was born August 1, 1921, in Columbus, Ohio, to Frances Jones and William Ewing Tytus. Following graduation from Lawrenceville School, Dr. Tytus attended Princeton University. He received his degree in medicine from Ohio State University and completed his internship and residency in neurosurgery at the University of Michigan. He served in the U.S. Army as a general surgeon at Sandia Base in Albuquerque,,New Mexico, from 1951 until 1953, and, in 1955, completed an extended residency in neurosurgery at the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford, England. In 1958, Dr. Tytus joined the department of neurosurgery at the Mason Clinic where he worked until his retirement in 1978. During his years of medical practice he served terms as Chief of Staff and Chief of Surgery at Virginia Mason Hospital, and President of the Virginia Mason Research Center. Dr. Tytus is survived by his wife of sixty-seven years, Virginia, daughter Kathleen Buhl, son William (Susan) Tytus, eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Daughter Elizabeth (Joseph P.) Burdock preceded him in death. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 18, 11:30 a.m., at Epiphany Parish of Seattle, 1805-38th Ave. Reception at the church to follow. A great surgeon and a truly wonderful guy. Though I haven't seen a lot of him in the last few years, my memories of him could not be warmer. I share your grief at his loss.
