Met Joe in 1978 when I joined the P-I as a sports copy boy. Since we were both native Montanans, we naturally hit it off. Joe had an understated humor. A real craftsman with words. One time I covered a high school basketball game involving his son. I made sure to work in the lad's name. I I know he appreciated it. Have a lot of wonderful memories of Joe.

Although I was not fortunate enough to know Joe, I can tell from the tributes Zack, Beth, Matt and Jatheen shared at his service that he was a very special man indeed. My heart goes out to all of his family in this sad time. May those memories both recent and from years gone by, provide you with strength to face this time, laughter when you need it most and joy in knowing that you all shared in such a special life. My thoughts are with you.

Joe Mooney was a mensch in the best sense of the word. A gentle man with a pure gold soft touch in his spoken and written voice. And what a observer and scribe...he found and wrote about things in ways that reached our hearts and our funny bones. Joe was a good friend, a good colleague and the best all-around natural writer I've ever read or worked with. Our prayers are for him, and with his family.
